It wouldn't be a very good game if you got to RtC and Garrett just stopped and said 'No way!' and you had to watch him sit there for 3 hours.

Ah... The Cradle... Nothing like an undead house full of undead .. things... and with it's own portal into it's even weirder past... It's also the only thief level I quick-saved roughly every 10-15 seconds due to sheer horror, and the only level I played that I had the lights on. Yeah, The Cradle scared the crap outta me.
And as far as what kind of person would do all those things that Garrett does... Well... A Master-Thief, of course. Someone who's so confident in his own skills and talents that there's really nothing impossible for him... With an ego the size of the whole town, and a *very* solid will to get the mission done, no matter the obstacles.
Now, considering Garrett's experience, I'd also say that his claims to be master thief are rather justified - He's never done jailtime, he's never been caught, he never really failed at anything - So no matter what, it's just "Another day at the office", and as always - The rent is due tomorrow. :p
(This is also Garrett's approach to things, atleast the way I see it - I'd say he's immune to drama and fear simply because he saved the world 3 times by now.)

He was captured by the Trickster and went to Pavelock prison though

Yes, that's true. . hehe. ahhh, Pavelock. I like going there so I can release all the prisoners and cause panic and mayhem .. erhh. . .:cheeky:
yeeahhhh. . .. Up on the top floor you can find and read Garrett's rap sheet, too, which is always amusing.

...... And he stays in that prison for how long? I'm talking about serious hard time here, not a quick visit in and out. (Not to mention looting the prison...)

Ah I see, you're right.

No, Zombies/Haunts.
Do you want to be a zombie. A creepy zombie... Arrrrghhhh!
Garrett's been undead before (see Schwaa's
Relic: Left for Dead for details).
Edit: Damnit. Now I've got to go play that one.

Garrett may have seen what happens to those who remain in his profession for at all long. The temptation of being able to retire might just be enough to take on the really risky job of getting the eye. At the time, he didn't know he'd have to go after the talismans, so it might have seemed a less dangerous job than it did in retrospect.
After he was double crossed, he would have been angry for his injuries, and the risk he went through to actually get the eye. He'd be holding one massive grudge. The hammers don't like the trickster (quite the understatement :) ), so maybe he could manipulate them into doing his dirty work for him.
Finally for the journey into the maw, it would probably be a mix of revenge payment... his replacement eye. Depth perception would be really important to a thief.
After he'd defeated a god... anything is possible!

Yametha? Is that you? haven't seen you around here an *awful* lot of time :D

Yes, it's me, Luthien. :hugs:
It has been quite a while!
