Not to burst the bubble, but until recently when mansions and other large establishments had large fireplace, it was very common to have a ladder in the chimney to assist in cleaning it.
I've climbed a few myself in my younger days working in large pre 1900 mansions where I once lived.
to be sure, they did not serve as access to other floors routinely, but did on occasion, access fireplaces a floor or two above that shared a common chimney. :ebil:
Indeed, Blackman!
Back in the 19th century they had people called chimney sweeps, usually very young boys who could fit into the chimney to sweep out all the dust and soot. Of course we no longer have child labour or chimney's and most children go to school nowadays. :cheeky:

Well the only reason I looked in the fireplace was because previous FMs had used that area to hide secrets. So I'm just trained to check them out everytime I see one. Also, the fact that it was an open hearth with no obstructions just begged you go crawling into it.
Yeah, its kind of "meta-gaming" ... but not every FM will hint about secrets in readables so we just run through our list of likely candidates. :)

Thief_4There.....where? What book have you? All the readables that you can pick up and go inyour inventory have names. The book is not hidden.
BrokenArts and smithpdWhy taking the ladder up there made no sense at all?
I don't think that it was the first time that you went
up a ladder in a chimney in Thief.....what's the problem then? It's too difficult turn around a building to see if there is another possible way in?
Oh don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this immensely. That is what you decided to do, its just a matter of opinion really. Yes, we've all used ladders in chimneys before, to gain access to a particular room, or area, sort of a forgotten area if you will. Just didn't expect it to be so populated up there, bit of a surprise really. Thief can be full of surprises, yes, I know.
Putting out the fire, triggers the pub people, they get pissed off. Walking through the fire, I would of not thought of that, it normally burns you.
Normally the ladders are a bit more visible, would of made it easier, I just checked that ladder, it is barely visible. you can just see the very bottom tips of the ladder rung. It blends into the fireplace a bit. Again, it's just a matter of opinion really. Seems a lot of people had trouble with the fireplace.
I am already on Night 3, and towards the end, but, I'm in no hurry. This is a great mission pack, sure to be a favorite with many taffers, as well as me. this has been a blast playing, thank you for your hard work Lady Rowena. :)

South end of Desolation Row, I mantled over a wall into a small yard with a tree,
frogbeast egg, and a basement with holy water.
But now I can't make the mantle out over the wall.
So, uhh... what's the proper way out? Or am I stuck?
Keep trying. Try the corner by the hatch. Don't try the front where the arch is. Try the side walls. It does work, but you may have to try a couple of times with a RUN/Jump/mantle.

Okay, I'll keep trying... tho all I've gotten so far has been Garret's goonish grunt of effort into failure. :weird:
Rowena: beautiful mission!! (and better than most games I've bought lately!) even if I've been staring at the same li'l yard for the past hour. :joke:

Move right up to the wall in the corner by the hatch. Try a W/Mantle. If that fails, slide a little to the right toward the front of the area. Try again.
Repeat as necessary. It took a few trys for me to get it and then again to get out. It will work, but it makes Garrett sweat. :)
Try the sidewalls on both sides this way.

Sorry that you find it difficult. :(
Try a little run, then jump without looking up. Just look in front of you.
I'm glad that you are enjoying it. :) (apart from the damned wall!):o

Thanks, tBm for the insight in chimney ladders.:)
I Googled it. It appears that ladders inside chimneys are common in really large chimneys, such as for power plants or industrial plants. Even so, I think they would be unsafe, so hoists may be more common today.
It would be unlikely to find such a ladder in a house or even a boarding house. Any house chimney I have seen would be much too small for a ladder, not to mention the difficulty of climbing through the damper. Standard house flue diameter = 8 inches = about 20 cm. Domestic chimney sweeps usually brush from above. They usually climb up the outside on their own ladders, not the inside.
And something else. Chimney sweeps are not a 19th century profession! They are quite common today, but in smaller numbers. There are six listings in the yellow pages for chimney sweeps in our town of 100,000. Anyone with a wood burning fire place should have it cleaned occasionally, because chimney fires from creosote are very dangerous.
Sorry for the OT. I guess we need to start another thread on chimney sweeping. ;) :D
And, Lady Rowena, none of this has anything to do with Thief or your mission, both of which use chimney ladders with some artistic license, and there is no problem at all with that. :)

Oh well, I had a chimney in my last house. It was an old country house. Of course there was no ladder in it.;)
The way it was supposed to clean the chimney was to attach a big sheaf of sprigs to a rope Then two persons, one on the roof and one down in the room had to make up-and-down so to scour the shaft. :)

I have finished night 2 but have one question. The only objective I could not complete was the optional
finding the cross at giles place. Where is it?
I searched everywhere. Thanks for the help!
