i think it has something to do with using just one seed for both hearts... ?no, didn't save before & no, i'm not in the mood for restarting, i think i cut it off at this point.

I've gone through and got the red stone key after going to the area with the wisps...but I don't know where to go to next. I know its the lava place, but a hint in the right direction would be a bonus please!

Wisps?I'm not sure of where you are.....there is only one wisp in the campaign, it's in Night Three before passing the Portal.....but you have already passed it.
Did you use the red stone key? If so you should be in the area with the Smoke Shadows, right?
To find the lava place, there is an access where you can see a skull on a short column, the other skull is on the ground. Follow that corridor, then go down the ramp, and down the stairs.
Anyway, you should also find the black stone key, which is in the Smoke Shadows area. It's not hidden.

I don't know where to usethe red stone key. Am I blind or something? I have gone back through the portal where the wall is that you climb over to reach the portal and I can't see anywhere to use my red stone key. I am taking my time but clearly I'm missing something really obvious.

If you are in the caverns with the skull lamps on posts and have found the lava go back to the entrance. From the entrance go to your left as you walk through the caverns.
You will find an area with two grated "garden" looking rooms on the left. On the right will be a flight of stairs and a ledge.
Directly in front of you will be a doorway. The key will open that door so you can go further into the area.
As always check all the rooms and side passages you pass through on your way.

Forgive me, theBlackman but...I've been to the place with the sirens, through where I got the key from killing the ice things..went up through this green cavern, eventually found a red stone key and made my way back...I'm now in the cavern with the sirens and I am completely as what to do next...I have not found a cavern with any columns or skulls...any help would be appreciated.

No, you don't have to go back. From where you found the red stone key, go ahead. You will find a large yellowish cavern where craymen and bugbeasts are patrolling. There is a sort of "springboard" and you have to jump to the other side, where you can use the red stone key. :)
