The sky and 'glow' effects around lights and the moon etc have really obvious contours in the shading - I don't know what the tech term for this effect is but I'm sure there is one.
It happens in the movies too, the shading across the faces, on backgrounds etc looks like it is being displayed in a low colour setting. But when I play the movies in media player they are fine and really smooth.
If it helps there is screenshot of the problem below. I don't know how to get screen of a movie but the contoured effect seen around the light and in the sky is really obvious all over the intro, cut seens, briefings, death and success screens.
I'm using a GeForce 6800GT. Anyone know what I can do please?

Unfortunately your error stems from the fact that modern geforce cards simply do not like Thief that much - in fact, they totally fuck up transparency. I have a geforce 6600 and I have the exact same problems with light coronas, light shafts and generally anything that uses transparency. There's unfortunately nothing you can do about it.
I don't know what's up with the movies though. Maybe your gamma settings are too high?

:( Well its the same sort of problem effect in the movies, briefings etc. but its not just glowing and transparency, its the surfaces of it all. It looks like its being played in a lower colour setting. I played them in media player and they seem perfect... its just when played through the game.

yes, thief does indeed run in 16bit mode
it saved a lot in performance at the time
it's a damn shame
