...alongside the acid slime, diamond moths, and countless other things I can't recall off the top of my head. It was a game where practically everything was moving onscreen at some point or another.
It might be the nostalgia talking here, but I just think that BD would make for a great 3D remake. If it were given a good physics engine, decent art direction that actually mimics the look of the original rather than this balloony semi-cartoon style we see in most XBLA remakes, it'd have more modern appeal than most other games of that generation.

Well, back to the game at hand, it does look pretty interesting. More Metroid the metroidvania though.

I'm downloading the trial at the moment. Does any have any of impressions from playing it or the full game?

Based on Scott Orson Card's novel Empire.

Apart from Eva getting the name wrong, what's so surprising about that?

Impressions so far:
It's far, far closer to Metroid then it is to any of the Metroidlike CV. No enemy drops for new equipment, only power ups, and the XP system is so shallow they could've left it out entirely. This isn't entirely bad, as at least you're never farming enemies for new stuff.
While focused on exploration, between the automap pointing out all items, and the flashlight giving anything interactive a glow, if you're looking for hard core exploration, you'll have to keep your flashlight and map off.
It's not really 2d, closer to 2.5d where you can sometimes shoot at enemies in the background. So far, this is rubbing me as a bad decision. Enemies in the 'background' haven't added anything all that interesting to the game, but the fact that you need to be able to aim into the background, shoot and move at the same time means that attacks are mapped to the shoulder buttons. It works, sort of, in FPSes for consoles, but on a 2d scroller it just feels wrong.
Given that you already have a stick for aiming, I'm very confused as to why they didn't just make pressing down on the movement stick duck. Having it mapped to a button is entirely unneccessary.
Death seems to come very quickly if you're not careful - even on normal, enemies can reduce your health bar to nothing in short order.
Now, it is actually quite a bit of fun, and worth the $15 or so, at least so far. But it's a live arcade title for a reason, and it's not likely to go down in the hall of fame like Metroid or SotN.

Cussin' ain't allowed in subject lines, according to TTLG rules for
whatever reason, hence the self-censoring.
Maybe it promotes the use of needless swearing.

what about the monkey island remake?

Aside from the book being a complete whack-a-doodle laughingstock?

Eh, since when did a bad story ever stop someone from creating a game around it?
Besides, Card's been involved in games and writing for them for quite a bit now, and he has plenty of credibility regardless of the occasional stinker every now and then.
