"Decide who lives or dies in this stunning prequel to the lord of the rings"?
Elrond. Elrond lives. Elendil and Isildur die.
I don't see why they keep making these things either prequels (so you know who's going to live: anyone who's alive in LOTR, and who's going to die: anyone who's dead in LOTR or who is clearly made up for the prequel), or 'concurrent with LOTR events' (so you know that your epic tale will basically amount to "we saved the day so awesomely that nobody even knew we did anything").
Ok, I've actually played War in the North (thoroughly in the latter category) and it's very very silly co-op funs, but it feels so stale.
I'd really like to see someone try and tackle what happened AFTER LOTR, since (scouring of the shire aside) it's mostly just "they all lived happily ever after". It'd be nice to have someone do a "and having defeated the big bad, everyone pretty much started vying for power and backstabbing each other, because good or bad: people are basically dicks. Also there are still orcs and goblins and shit."
Though I suppose the whole "they all lived happily ever after" covers so much time post-sauron that you'd be into 'concurrent' territory anyway.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, it's probably worth pointing out that Monolith is making this. Amazingly, it's their first singleplayer game since FEAR 2, as well.

Ehh, actually taking the time to read some of the links, I have to say....as prequels go, they've actually gone for a pretty good approach, so I retract my earlier criticism.
"You're a ghost of vengeance fucking shit up in mordor" sounds surprisingly fun.

I liked War in the North. It was fun co-op but clunky and weird. In regards to SoM, I think it could be interesting. The mechanics outlined in the neogaf thread sound good, on paper at least.

I liked the part of War In The North that I was able to play. Unfortunately, unless you have an Nvidia card there's a part of the campaign that's impassable.

writes this stuff?
I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Though to me the LOTR universe always felt more... innocent?... than how your standard 'character action game' is presented these days. Maybe I'm being precious* but I don't think I really want to walk around Middle Earth stabbing Orcs in the face with gratuitous takedown animations. Maybe that's just my cynicism for the game industry speaking :P.
Having the game set in Mordor, though, seems like it would strip away all the
nice parts of the setting, making it all gloom all the time.
I really hope we get to play in Osgiliath.
*Or possibly
preciousss.

The plot summary reads like a grimdark fantasy version of The Crow. Back from the dead with supernatural powers to get revenge, etc.
