This has rather suddenly become my most anticipated game. I still love a good shooter but much prefer battling monsters with outlandish weaponry over the military stuff.

Just played a solid 3 hours of this and, holy fucking shit, have Flying Wild Hog nailed it. It's a massive improvement over both the original game and Hard Reset, brilliantly blending the best both old school and new school FPS approaches. You've got the over-the-top action in colourful environments against hordes of enemies but there's also upgradeable skills, powers and weapons that work in tandem with a 'skillshot' type system, so you can really finesse that slaughter if you want to. You can carry all weapons, save whenever you want and fly through the levels without being interrupted by scripted sequences every few minutes. Those levels are more linear than the older games but nowhere near as restrictive as the typical modern shooter and they are packed with secrets; some of which are bloody hard to find and reward you with a goofy reference to other games. The production values are top notch, the game is a real looker, and I'm even enjoying the story. It's cheesy and groan worthy at times but in a knowing B-movie way and I've warmed to this version of Lo Wang.

The only issues so far is that some of the katana moves are a little fiddly to pull off (not that that would stop me from using it 85% of the time - it's just so awesome) and so far it's just been combat. No puzzles or anything else to change it up. I'm actually happy with that but as I said, I'm only 3 hours into it so hopefully, combat fatigue doesn't set in. If you have even the tiniest bit of love left for FPS games, you should grab this right away.

Anyway, I'll leave you with these words from Devolver Digital CEO, Fork Parker:

Yep! I'm up to chapter 7 and it's flat-out fantastic! The combat is incredible! Flying Wild Hog have done such an amazing job. It puts all other shooter reboot attempts to shame. It's very much it's own thing, but as George Broussard said, 'I think Flying Wild Hog may have exceed the original game :)' (https://twitter.com/georgeb3dr/status/380541334945161216) I would have to agree with him. Anyone who likes goofy shooters won't regret picking this up.
