The matrix stuff I'm looking forward to.
Hope the mini campaign gets in as well. Be great to some higher end content. Require some real strategy.

And it's off! Final tally 1.2 million.
icemann on 18/2/2015 at 11:34
Which is insanely awesome :D. Can't wait to have a play of it.

1,2 million is a pretty good haul with the waning interest in Kickstarter.

I'm guessing that having previous good form is a factor.

Much of that is doomsayer stuff generated by the gaming media that's been going on since kickstarter started doing video game related stuff.
If there's a game with a good idea behind it, complete with a good video, pitch etc then they still succeed more often than fail. I've backed quite a few and only 2 of those (7th Guest 3 and Solarix) failed to meet their initial target. Majority hit a few stretch goals. Note that I'm basing that off the kickstarter projects that have interested me, and thus have more often than not backed and watched the progress of. Though I do keep watch of the kickstarter thread on the RPS forums where they list what video game related kickstarters are in progress, have failed or succeeded etc.
I find kickstarter games more interesting than many of the more main stream stuff, since their often either of genres not touched by the large gaming companies (Torment, Shadowrun Returns, Wastleland 2, various metroidvania style games etc), other times interesting genre mash-ups.
I also find the kickstarter updates that you get throughout a games development process to be really damn interesting. Of course this doesn't happen with every one of them, but the majority do them semi-often (or of the ones I've backed). Harebrained studios for example does quite detailed updates complete with development videos.

I have also backed quite a few KS projects and seen a lot of failed ones too. In my experience, it has become much harder to get people to check out KS projects and to get the press to cover them. And if your KS doesn't have a big name attached to it, you are in a different league entirely.
Maybe it's because I've also backed a lot of niche games, not just famous brands like Torment and Wasteland and Shadowrun.

I seem to have done OK with KS. Projects backed so far:
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hinterlandgames/the-long-dark-a-first-person-post-disaster-surviva) The Long Dark - Looking very good in alpha (or is it beta?) at the moment.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leafygames/pulsar-lost-colony) Pulsar: Lost Colony - Not sure how this will turn out and I've not had much chance to play the alpha (beta?) as it's a multiplayer game and most of the ships I see are locked / private. If any TTLGers have access to this, let me know as it'd be nice to see what it can do.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/krillbite/among-the-sleep) Among the Sleep - Released. Not played it yet and reviews seem to put it around 6.5/10 on average, but that's still a success in my books.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/battle-worlds-kronos-turn-based-strategy-revisited) Battle Worlds Kronos - Released. I got an Android version free too. Good game if you liked Battle Isle.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1473965863/sui-generis) Sui Generis - This one seems to be taking a while. There's a combat demo and the combat is VERY hard to get to grips with as it's physics based (you have to use momentum and swing timing). Not sure what the deal is with this game, it's taking a long old time. But I'm glad I backed it as the idea warranted promotion.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/simonroth/maia) Maia - This one is also taking its sweet time. There are alpha demos, which were pretty rudimentary the last time I checked (over a year ago). I may have to download the latest one and see what's what.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/garehan/the-new-closet-guitar-hanger) The new closet guitar hanger - Bought 2. They're awesome. Not much else to say.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/70755535/dead-state-the-zombie-survival-rpg) Dead State - Released. Not playing it until it's had a few patches. Seems to not be blowing anyone's mind, but I'm a sucker for turn-based stuff, so I'm sure it'll have been worth it.
(
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2) Wasteland 2 - Released. Seems to have got very good reviews and even a few GoTY nominations, so I'd call that a win.
On reading, this seems like a fairly tepid overall experience, but I'm still pleased I've contributed to a few developments which aren't tied to a publishing company's commercial needs. Raises the question of whether this results in a lower overall quality. I'd say that it probably has, but the effect is similar to audio compression - you get a nicer overall sound, but lose some of the interesting bits in the dynamic range.

Haha those closet guitar hangers are amazing, what a great idea.

I wonder how many of the people who criticise Kickstarter most actually supported projects, and how the supporters view Kickstarter. There's probably some confirmation bias going on here, but I supported one or two dozen projects, many have succeeded, some are still running, and a couple outright failed, and I am still a big fan of Kickstarter and what it can do. I've also got a bunch of games and films that I'm happy to say exist because of Kickstarter.
