My friend recently gave me all of his old PC games. Thief 2 was in there.
I played Thief 3 (yeah yeah, it seems you guys don't like it much) but I loved the idea of it, and actually enjoyed playing the majority of it. I love love love stealth games, but would I like Thief 2?
I realize the series pretty much invented stealth games.. but is it too late to play Thief 2? I know you guys love it, but you've been enjoying it for ten years, but I think it's just too late for me to enjoy this game.
The graphics look reallllly old from screenshots.
I dunno.. should I give it a try? Is the story and gameplay really good enough to the point where I can ignore the visuals and get into the game?
thanks in advance.

You should play TDP (the first) and TMA (the second) if you have both. If not then do play TMA. Ignore the lack of fancy smancy graphics and let the game take you.
Forget everything you learned from other games and take it as it comes. You'll not regret it.
As you have played the souped up TDS with the arrow trails blinding loot glint, you will have some problems realizing that the game only works because you do.
YOU and not the game have to see the loot, how to aim and use the bow and the other items.
No, take my hand chile and I will guide you through the trials and tribulations.
If you just play the game and not try to BEAT each mission you will become a convert. That is unless you are jaded and brain dead. And believe me braindead will not get you through TDP or TMA.

Well this is a Thief fan forum, so what kind of an answer you expect? ;)
But yeah, I think you should definitely at least try it. The graphics may be outdated now (T2 already looked a bit old when it came out), but the game itself is still great and a very unique experience - there's no other game like Thief. Don't judge the book by its cover and all that, you know. :p
Thief 2 still doesn't look THAT bad in my opinion, in fact I quite like the simple graphics. In games with more realistic graphics I often pay much more attention to little details that look silly - in Thief the graphics are undetailed enough so that your imagination will have to add the remaining details!
Some of the fan-made missions make the game look a lot better with improved textures and some visual tricks, so if you like the game, you may want to check out some of those.

I played Thief 1 first and it was considered outdated even in 2003, when we had dozens of other games with fancy graphics...
But after you play the first mission, you don't care about that. Thief is great!

Thief 2 is a cleaner version of Thief 1, according to the devs, and although I don't like the atmosphere as much, of T2, I think you'll enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure these wont hurt your eyes too badly:
The screenshot of Sliptip's mission does hurt my eyes quite badly... in a good way. :erg: (the others are very good too, of course) He has got everything right there - the architecture, the textures, and most importantly, the lighting.
Just looking at these pictures kind of makes me want to quit Dromed for good, or at least get some better textures. And add more sides on my cylinders! :p

thanks guys. i'm installing as we speak.
I'm worried it might have the "Goonie" syndrome. I love love love movies like the Goonie, but now if I were to watch one with my friend, many years later, who had never seen this movie in their childhood, they wouldn't enjoy it the way I have.
I just needed to get pumped on this game enough to play it, and for that, thanks.
I'll let you guys know what I think.
