...jump, swim and climb ladders and ropes to follow Garrett, or should they just stand still and shake their fists at him?

Drowning guards ftw.
'nuff said.

...have proper titles? ;)
I'd like to see the guards do a better job at pursuing the player, but only when it makes sense. A city guard might give up at the first obstacle, since you could go anywhere and the guard wouldn't be responsible for more than a street or two. A mansion guard on the other hand should make much more of an effort, since your escape could allow you to rob the place bind and all the guards would get in trouble for that.

How about some variety? Jump some small distance yes, climb ladders slowly yes. For the rest why not include a toggle for AI that lets them set some to swim, or climb ropes or what have you, some not? Much more realistic than AI that can't do any of the above, or all of the above. Wouldn't it be nice if we get the chance to mod Thief 4 if we could set such things for AI along with the usual hearing, sight, alertness, etc? Hell set it all to toggles.
Unless it's a toggle that can be AI specific, I'd say no. After the intial "OMG the guards can follow me!" reaction, it would just piss off most Thief purists, and probably turn off n00b players as being too hard.

I agree with RS; I've had some mansion guards chase me up & down stairs and some City guards chase me for what seemed like an eternity.
I liked it.
I don't want the guards (or any AI) to be so stupid that you can sneak past right under their noses in daylight. I much prefer very alert guards who will give chase and not give up because they can't jump over the crate in the middle of the road.
I've often wondered what it'd be like to have the guards jump in the water after you, or be able to climb ladders. But if guards could climb ladders while chasing you, would that mean they could climb up your rope arrows after you as well? Sounds challenging, but where would you find a place to hide while being pursued then?

They should be able to climb ladders, but a system ala Resident Evil 4 where you can shove the ladders down would be cool.
IMO they should actually accentuate the "chase" aspect of the Thief games a bit more in this one. It's been a cool aspect of previous games where you get the adrenaline pumping as you scream in terror while fleeing. With the hopefully improved movement systems (hopefully it'll allow for simple vaults over tables or over rails like in Mirror's Edge) I think it's a nice aspect of the game to improve upon. Being caught shouldn't just result in a quick dash back into the shadows, there should be serious penalties for it. I don't mean giving the player slim chances of surviving, but I mean forcing them to really book it for quite a ways, and in many cases to have to divert from the intended path.
I'm actually against quicksaving and quickloading for this reason - many people use it as a crutch or as the easy way out. Checkpoints are very difficult with nonlinear games, unfortunately, but I'm definitely not a fan of quicksaves.

I think they should learn to go make their own dinner.

That might break the level, unless the player is given the means to put the ladder back up.

I'd like to see them climb ladders and pursue past obstacles but climbing a rope might be a less than guard tactic, takes away from some of the thief advantages, and swimming wouldn't make sense either, they are carting around a ton more gear than G.
