That seems like a cool idea. And the winning FM could have "FM of the Year 20XX" beside it on sites like Thief Guild. With a list of every year's best fan rated FM.
downwinder on 8/3/2022 at 00:40
if i was a betting person i would have to say "god breaker" would probably be the best or in the top 3 and i did not even need a poll to figure that out
comes down to massive missions with lots to do ,some decent polish on mission add in some extra's,and of course having the next probably most anticipated continuation of story come out in the distant future would make it highly voted
and yes there are many other amazing missions that i feel are as good like "seven sisters"/etc
t2x would also get a super high rank in my view as it was such a massive task to see it to completion and when it first came out wow
i can go on and on with mission after mission but you get the point
new thief players play ever single t1/tg/t2 fan missions and you will be a lot happier then going by some list
also i wanted to add even trying to pick the best fm author would be impossible as each of us most likely love different aspect of each authors style in there missions
i would go even further to say trying to pick the best theme for a fan mission would be to hard
the deeper down the rabbit hole we go there is more questions then answers

Oh wow love all these ideas! I had kinda lost attention on the thread so thanks to samantha1 for the kind PM.

Sure, but the way I see it, the benefit of this method of polling is to compare ouputs of each year. By chance, you may see a year's competition being between two or more massive classics, like you said, while on the next year you may have to choose betwen the relatively a relatively obscure and not so epic bunch. And to the rest, it's like with everything, at some point you make a line in the sand and you say, "it's up to here".
So, how would we start if we were to do this?
Samantha1 on 20/3/2022 at 20:09
Well, I´m going to work out a poll now together with fortuni and soon start with it. Hope it will have lots of participants! :)

I think it would be a good idea to force players to score all mission released in certain year in scale 1-10. And only votes that scored all missions would count in poll. This would encourage people to play all missions and decide from them what's the best mission. This would prevent people only choosing best mission from just couple of missions they played, because there are players who only play certain author's missions and don't care about other. Because of that we will never be sure if one of missions they never played is even better than their favorite. Despite what downwinder said I don't think many people played every fan mission, because not everyone has that much time. And even if they played I don't know if they still remember these missions well. So there will be a need to replay all of them. So I hope for years with big number of release you will give bigger time for poll.
Also I think it would be a good idea to start from recent 2021 year as people have still fresh memory from playing FMs and then go backwards to previous years.
Good luck with creating new poll.

Thanks for your input galaer, I do think it´s a great idea, but I guess we were a bit too fast :laff: the poll is already up and I hope we were able to include the best missions everyone likes :)
Btw starting with recent 2021 year missions is not a good idea. 1999 missions arent as good as later ones and so on and on, so we definitely have to start with the earlier years, otherwise it will get boring fast.
fortuni on 21/3/2022 at 17:32
To late Galaer, Samantha has post first poll.
The whole point of any such poll is just a bit of fun, don't think you could possibly find a perfect solution to find an overall winner out of 1200 missions, especially as you said many people will not have played every mission and even if they did they may not remember the details, apart from Downwinder of course whose played every mission 10 times.
As for scoring 1-10 on every mission that again could have over complicated things, with 30+ polls to be run over the course of the rest of the year keeping it simple is probably the best and easiest way forward.

I realize I'm late to the party here, but why split by year? IMO, splitting by genre would be more interesting/helpful. Just my two cents :)
Kubrick on 13/4/2022 at 17:47
Galaer's idea is great, because I certainly did just that with the first poll I voted on: voted the only one of that year I had really played. Maybe for the next ones? I think it would add so much to the polls. Otherwise I don't see much point. Sorry to criticize specially when I was the one who came up with it and then dissapeared, even though Samantha1 has been PMing me about it!

Yeah sure, that's just a different axis on which to order and think about them, could be done in the future although I feel like the results wouldn't be that interesting. Too many heist missions, the best thieves highway one is obvious IMO, same with the swamp, and the very best will are be very recent too. Ordering it by best of each year gives you a timeline, you can see the top of each year and probably see advancements, new ideas that then percolate to the whole of the FM community, etc.
edit to expand on this, while I was talking with samantha1 on PM:
I really like the suggestions, but I understand if they're too limiting or much of a pain, but I really think they would not only provide more interesting answers, but also make the people that engage with the polls more interested too. So far they look like people vote but don't really comment. If they were kinda encouraged to play them all, they would probably interact more, kinda like what happens when there's a new contest: people play them all before voting.
If all of the FMs had to be given a score, we probably wouldn't see like 15 people voting for Calendras Cistern, maybe not more than five, but at least those five would play all of them and their scores combined would produce interesting results.
