I think it's playtester related, too. The red flash when taking damage is part of the shroud system as well.

Really? and Really? I liked the Shroud. I thought it was an excellent way to complete Looking Glass Thief's otherwise excellently non-existent UI. The light gem was there purely out of necessity, and if Eidos figured out a way I can play without it, I will. It always bugged me, just like how I wondered why ostensibly master thieves emit annoying loot sounds, and why the guards never seemed to notice them.
If you're crouching in the dark, where no guard can see you even when staring directly at you, you shouldn't get perfect peripheral oddly-rectangular vision. Now THAT'S a game about inequality. There's something of a disconnect between the "Thiefier than Thou" they're making this game too easy, and demanding perfectly unimpeded vision in a stealth game, except depending on gamma-trust. No fog! No shroud! Also, I'm also glad they let you, and encourage you, to turn off quick-saving, finally.

To be fair, red flashes as part of a "you're taking damage" notification goes back to at least Wolfenstein. Hell, even System Shock 1 and I think 2 both do it as well.

The shroud doesn't really bother me like it seems to do with most people. The white flash is what I really don't like.

Agreed. I don't like the shroud because of the claustrophobic feeling that will likely come with it, but the white flash is what bothers me the most.

I'm going to have to play the game before I work out whether the shroud annoys me. I remember seeing Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and thought the blue screen while in shadows was ridiculous, but never gave it a second thought while playing.
