demagogue: i haven't inverted anything, just going by a standard dictionary definition where iconic relates specifically to imagery. Of course it stands in for/signifier of something but that is beside the point - which is - the image is doing the legwork. Not saying it has to be a religious icon anymore but generally the meaning would be clearly agreed upon and encapsulated in a single image, whatever it is..so there are clear interpretations when the image is used.
So Inception would qualify if they had managed to find a single image which encapsulated all the dream layers/different timelines in one. I've only seen the movie once but can't recall anything like this.
Concepts/ideas could be iconic but only if the imagery relates the meaning clearly...which is very difficult to do with an abstract concept. Anyway the icon part remains the imagey part..the concept..remains a concept.
Where are you getting this 'including a concept' definition from anyway? You just made it up right?
Half of what you guys are on about isn't remotely iconic - just a cool juxtaposition of sound and imagery.

http://i.imgur.com/FAUAd.pngTake this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow --
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand --
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep -- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Yes yes, I'm being intentionally pedantic. No trollmo.
