Its like back and forth with these people.
as awful as Alien:res was... it didn't touch how awful AVP was.
besides it was Cameron who ruined the series imho, all he did was give the over analytical nerds fuel to ruin the franchise.

I'd say this is PR work - nothing more (at least I hope so)

Face it; Alien and Aliens are classics. I agree with Ms. Weaver that if Ridley Scott was involved it might be worth it. From everything I've heard Cameron is a sarcastic bastard with whom a lot of actors have had serious problems working. He's a great director, but his ego inevitably ends up getting in the way every time.
Besides; Ellen Ripley is my hero. :p
Just wish they hadn't killed off Hudson, Hicks, & Vasquez though.
Tocky on 5/7/2008 at 17:52
It's just too late. They screwed the pooch already. They killed off every possible story line when they started III with Newts death.
"Mommy said kill you. Kill you all... mostly."
Except going after "the company" in retribution which they also screwed.

I am not sure why so many people hate Resurrection so much. Please explain.
I do not have a counterargument to the contrary, I'd simply like to understand why it is so disliked.

The problem with Resurrection is that it's a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film, and his sensibilites are completely wrong for an alien film. Jeunet does surreal black comedy, not action/horror adventure. The (
http://www.planetavp.com/amr/html/scripts/a4shoot.txt) script's so much better than what wound up on screen, mostly because of how the scenes were played. There's also some terrible miscasting, especially Winona Ryder as Call and whoever the guy is that played Vriess. And the Ripley-hybrid moments were just ugh.
Dia on 5/7/2008 at 19:19
I didn't hate Resurrection at all. Could've done without some of the gratuitous blood & guts, but overall I thought it was very good and liked the twisted concept of Ripley being 'reborn' as half Alien/half Ripley tremendously. Even the third Alien had its moments, few though they may have been. I remember reading somewhere at the time (of Alien 3) that Ms. Weaver was all in favor of killing Ripley off once and for all.
And I disagree with you Tocky; there's plenty of potential for an Alien 5. When I saw the end of Resurrection as they landed on Earth (in Ron Perlman's words, 'What a shit-hole!') I remember thinking that that angle might make for a great story line wherein the Aliens finally make it to what's left of Earth to start wreaking havoc there. I also think the relationship between Ripley & Call would enhance that kind of story line. And of course, one would fully expect Johner to go along for the ride, seeing as how his character seems to like killing things.
Throw Ridley Scott's wonderous talent into the mix & you'd have a potential blockbuster. At least imho. :p
I also disagree that there was any miscasting re: Call & Vriess. I thought Ryder had that perfect mix of pathos and disdain for real humans that the script called for. And Dominique Pinon as Vriess was another perfect choice too.
Morte on 5/7/2008 at 19:31
The problem with Ryder is that she's a delicate little flower, not at all intimidating, and not at all credible as a hard-ass.
Dia on 5/7/2008 at 19:36
I thought that was the beauty of Ryder's performance; that Call came across as fragile and vulnerable, yet when it mattered she was as tough as she needed to be. The perfect counterpoint to the seriously intimidating Ripley.

See, I love Resurrection in a totally different way than I love Alien and Aliens and even Alienses. They're all four completely different flicks, and I can never understand why people rag on Resurrection so much. Sure, it's EuroCartoony and the camerawork leans more toward Gilliam than Scott or Cameron, but I love it. Reminds me of all that awesome Moebius and Mézières and Manara and all the French, Italian, and Spanish fantasy / sci-fi illustrators I grew up on.
I do think Alienses could have been better, but Resurrection? When you see Ron Perlman, Dominic Pinon, and DAN HEDAYA in a cast you ought to already know what the director's aiming for. Never mind Michael Wincott. :D
I kinda like the way the Alien series has yanked canon all over the place, staying within the general framework but not letting itself get mired in the ultra-convoluted mess that often happens when you try to retcon or otherwise fix problems caused by universal expansion.
Um.
Go Ripley.
