Considering most of the times I've played SH1 I was like 5 inches from a 19" screen, yes. They weren't.

She's not an antagonist, she's not helpful either, she doesn't have any worthwhile connection to James at all and she does zilcho to drive the main story forward. You could remove her from the game completely, and the rest of the plot wouldn't even skip a beat. So why is she even there?
You just described every NPC in the game (aside from Maria).

What I don't understand is why Konami keep farming out the series the Western 3rd party developers. This marks the 4th game not developed internally.
+1. A surhor from not Japanese devs is usually a trash. Only a few exceptions.

There are only like 4 of em in the game. The fat maniac is a boss and therefore antagonist, the little girl serves as a parallel to James in that they're both there for Mary, while Maria and Mary are both central to the story.

Yeah let's pretend Alone In The Dark, The Suffering, the first Condemned, ObsCure, System Shock 1 and 2, among others, never happened. You fucking weeaboo.

Yeah, they all suck as surHORs. Obscure is a plain trash BTW.

Actually, now that I think about it, are you sure the SH2 fandom overmind hasn't fanwanked some deep symbolic "actual" meaning for Ms. Molestee? They have for everything else in SH2 that isn't nailed down.

Hm. Scarce resources, inventory management, difficult combat, strong horror theme, noticeable lack of NPCs, puzzle-solving, individualized enemy encounters that are much more personal due to the first three reasons mentioned above? Yeah, not at all like a survival horror.
Have you learned nothing since last November?

But the nurses weren't actually unique to James at all. Harry encountered them in the decidedly not "Everything is a metaphor" Silent Hill 1.
Dethtoll is correct, a creature's appearance can be very different to each individual. Eg when Angela is be cornered by the Door Monster, she sees her father coming to rape her.
Usually people's versions of the town don't overlap at all. Eg Laura never encounters any monsters. Eddie meets ordinary people whom become his murder victims.

How an intelligent person can seriously equate titles like ObsCure, The Suffering, Condemned in terms of HORROR with real things like team Silent's SHs, Fatal Frames, Forbidden Sirens or even Kuon is beyond me.
BTW, REs are too in the same league of Western 'horrors' as those you like.
