The thing about 3 was that it was essentially wrapping up loose ends from 1. I agree that 1's story was vague and ambiguous- but the reason for that was because it was originally going to be very strongly centered around Satanism, but thanks to executive meddling they had to tone it down and make it more ambiguous. 3 serves to explain a few things that didn't get explained too well in 1, which is why 3 possibly seems over-explained.

In a magazine article about the developer (Vatra games) the journalist mentioned that he has seen the game in action and it reminded him mostly of Alan Wake. So maybe this first person rumor is really just a rumor.

I think Shattered Memories is superior to the original. :) At least from the control scheme perspective. The original has some of that really awful early 3D control scheme "magic". I think the worst aspect is the directional controls that change orientation as you move from screen to screen. That is really jarring for me at least.

Well, I can't comment on Shattered Memories' control scheme, since that would require actually playing it.....but lets be blunt here, SH1, 2 and 3 had shitty control schemes on purpose. They weren't quite "original Resident Evil purposefully obtuse" bad, but they sure as hell weren't good.

He writes that the controls change orientation as you move in SH1, which is just plain wrong. Up is forward, down is backward, left and right are, well, left and right. At all time . I find character-oriented controls more intuitive than screen-oriented ones (which you can switch to in SH2 and SH3 from the menu, btw).

I was playing the game emulated about a year ago. I just remember being down an alleyway and having the controls be a fight as the scene changed. Maybe it was instead the camera position moving to different walls as I moved around the area, effectively changing the direction I needed to go in, but not literally the control orientation.
Shattered Memories of course looks a ton better and has some of the modern production qualities. I enjoyed exploring the game world before the frozen world takes over. I didn't play a lot of the game however. I sold my Wii to a friend a couple of months ago.
I'm not judging the series. Just wanted to drop by and say that I found the controls to be a bit quirky (just like almost every 3D game back then.)
