Shattered Memories is brilliant though, one of the best narrative games I've ever played. Clever, ingenious, and wow...a story which made me cry. Literally cry, both times I played it through.
Hey, Blue Sky!
I cannot remember which game it was, but either Silent Hill 2 or 3 made me tear up during the ending. This one didn't, but my better half and I were just awe-struck and were just staring silently @ the ending movie with our jaws on the floor. It was like getting slammed up side the head with a hammer. Which ending(s) did you get, by the way? I got:
o+- Hero Forever -+o
How To Get It:
Build up any Fake PI that you can. Basically, you want to play off like you're
not interested in the doctor's help, just saying whatever you need to in order
to get through the therapy. Whenever you can, try to contradict yourself.
Major PI:
- Look away from the doctor while he's talking; stare at the lamp
- Answer "False" or "No" to every question asked except to confirm completion
- Put all the sleeping/dead photos on one side (doesn't matter which)
- Don't adjust the guilt line
- Pair two gay couples
- Put all the abstract images on the non-sexual side
- Let Harry drown in the car, as well as on the way to the lighthouse
Description:
"Dad..." Cheryl whispers. Harry kneels down before her. "You are a hero." She
smiles, happier with a father she loves than the truth. "The man who died ...
that wasn't my father." She pauses, taking a breath. Her eyes begin to water.
"That isn't who I remember. Those memories are all I have. You're all I have."
He turns from her. "I'm not even a ghost..." he whispers.
Cheryl shakes her head, unable to bear losing him. She wraps her arms around
him tightly, tears streaming down her face. They hold each other closely. For
once, Cheryl feels warm...
AND...
o+- Wicked and Weak -+o
How To Get It:
Gain lots of Unfriendly PI and act like you hate everything. Having the tan
coat outfit is a good indicator that you're on your way to this ending.
Major PI:
- "False" to questions: 1 and 3
- "Yes" to being a private person, and taking a while to be understood
- "No" to preferring friends over family
- "Yes" to being a bully and slacker
- All sleeping photos on "Dead" side
- Watch Lisa change - She'll be angry
- Give Lisa the wrong pills
- Place Celestine, the princess, as most guilty
- All abstract images non-sexual
Description:
Cheryl walks down the dark hall, playing with her video camera. She heads
towards her parents' bedroom to show them, when she realizes that they're
fighting. Again...
"You piece of shit!" Dahlia screams at Harry, "When're you gonna bring in some
real money?" She slaps him.
Harry raises his hand to his face. He says nothing. Nothing will satisfy this
demon of rage.
"You think your crap is Shakespeare? Your piece of shit novels... no one even
reads them!" She strikes him again in fury. Harry collapses to the floor. He yet
remains silent.
"Be a man!" Dahlia screams "Come on! Fight back!" Harry does nothing. Dahlia
towers over him, glaring down at the weak man before her. "You're pathetic...
to think that I used to hang off your every word.... to this waste of space!"
She strikes him again.
Harry's glasses clack against the wooden floor. He bends over and picks them
up, slowly returning them to his face. He notices Cheryl with her camera. For
a moment he looks at her, ashamed of himself. He remains silent.
There are 2 'parts' to the ending. One in the therapy session and the second is played back from a videotaped recording @ home. I think there are 3 therapy and 4 videotape endings. I haven't done the math but that is a heck of a lot of possible combinations.
Fuck it, I am going to replay it right now. I <3 this damn game.
EDIT: I am also VERY curious about the playability of this on both PS2 and especially PSP. Care to post a bit about your experiences with the controls?

To be honest I haven't done a lot of research into all the combinations and stuff... I should look them up and then I could say exactly what I got. Once I played the game through once I went back and played it all over again, basically doing as much as I could differently. I definitely got a different therapy and ending movie. Yeah, I'll have to look them up and report back!

When I next see my friend I'll have to have a go on his PSP version to see what it's like.
Certainly on PS2 the controls seemed very natural, with one stick to control walking and the other the flashlight/viewpoint. No problems, no fuss. I'm not a console gamer usually and much prefer WASD/mouse, but the SM controls were some of the most fluid and least infuriating that I've ever played on a console. I certainly found it easier to control than any of the previous SH games with their fixed camera positions, etc.
The "quicktime events" when enemies grab you involve button smashing rather than the Wii's throwing movement, which sounds much cooler to be honest. But that didn't detract from the game at all, and felt a lot more natural than similar button smashing you have to do in Origins because the button you press to throw off corresponds to the side the creature has caught you from. So it's less, "why do I have to press the triangle, I don't understand!" and more, "argh, monster grabbed me from the front, quick, press the 'front' button, which just so happens to be the triangle!". If that makes sense!
Graphically it all looks brilliant on the PS2. Bit jaggeddy, maybe, but it seems leagues ahead of SH2 and 3 in terms of detail, and the illusion that the world is all pre-loaded meaning no waiting times when you open doors. I didn't think they'd be able to create that effect for the PS2 but there it is!
I know what you mean about wanting to replay it again now. SM was the first ever game where, once I completed it, I went back to the start and played through it all again. Doubt I'll ever do that again, either!

Thanks for the post. And yeah, the streaming levels were on the Wii also. So no loading screens. Hell, even my girlfriend was impressed with that. It keeps the cinematic flow going, the pace up, and helps to forget that you are playing a game.
Here is a link to the GameFAQs guide that I researched the Mementos and my ending with. Searchable with Ctrl+f like any doc.
