Ice can be scary if used right in setting a scene. The Thing is one example. Extermination on ps2 used it quite well also.
That said, I`m far more a fan of just having heavy fog effects as thats a traditional Silent Hill thing. 1-3 all use it to great effect and create a very claustrophobic type atmosphere with it.

Loved The Thing, does it well indeed. Also presented the additional hazard of freezing to death, made going outside really something to dread, even if I didn't die from it once. But a terrificly well done hostile place to be nevertheless, it's creepy just like the vacuum sections in Dead Space. I really need to fix my Wii, got the game and can't play it :(

I was sceptical about the ice thing. Rust and metal and crusted (is that english?) blood are as disgusting and disturbing as hell. But the icey otherworld works brilliantly here. It stops time, it stops breathing, thinking, being. Check the falling flakes. Add mazes and monsters and you get like singularity events in terror. The falling sequences (probably inspired by HR Giger's "Schacht" paintings, lookie: (
http://blog.shopnastygal.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/schacht2.jpg) and (
http://tdpoa.joelll.net/hrgiger/other/hr_giger_schacht_VI.jpg) ) are especially amazing. The Wiimote/cellphone thing is great.
It's weird, it's disturbing, it's poetic and despite the strict barrier between yay- and naymonsterzones it's still unpredictable and unsettling. Since you still never really know when everything turns.
I'm about halfway through I guess. Can't say too much about the therapy "the game plays you as you play it" thing yet. Replay is a must obviously.

Who in their right mind would hang something like that on their wall, seriously awesome but disturbing as can be. Going to check this fellow out.
Glad it's good. Hate my wii is broken

Same people that like the Alien movies maybe... :D
btw I read some criticism about the nightmare world and how it makes you feel safe in the "normal" world. Weeell, it makes perfect sense that only Harry stumbles into the nightmares. If the creeps and monsters would be everywhere, how could the other protagonists remain calm to provide you with all the infos and story arches? Yes having them spread all around in other SH games "worked", but that didn't make any sense and yes, SH games are not about making sense, but still, I like this take on much better.

Got a book tip for you, I just know you are going to love it. Get 'House of Leaves' by Mark Z. Danielewski. I am 100% sure it's a good recommendation.
edit; every Silent Hill fan should, this is just what you like.
Looks like this, yes it's pretty weird

RE: House of Leaves: That page is actually not very representative of the entire book. One chapter, yes, but not the entire book. The book itself is comprised of what basically boils down to a long analysis of a movie that doesn't exist, complete with footnotes, some of them written by the guy who found the original papers and collated them into a readable document, many of his footnotes going off on very lengthy tangents revolving around his sexual escapades and increasing paranoia. It's a good book, but a hefty read and some people are going to be put off by the unconventional layout. That particular chapter is mostly designed as such because several characters get lost in a labyrinth (if I remember correct) and the chapter was designed to be a bit of a maze to read, with plenty of dead ends (footnotes) that lead nowhere/tell you nothing.

Why don't you make a point instead of 'it sucks because it sucks'. A real remake of Silent Hill would only expose it's aged gameplay mechanics.
and seek professional help angry-man.
hurp durp yeah nobody bought silent hill 5 because of aged gameplay mechanics (except YOU because there's no accounting for taste)
Of course you would like the ice. You probably think it helps bolster your global cooling argument.

Who are you, Catbarf or ZymeAddict? If you want your argument to hold any credibility, how about you fucking play the game before writing it off? "JUDGING ONLY BY THIS ONE TRAILER THAT I'VE SEEN, THE GAME IS SHIT! HURRRR DURRRR"
Accusing me of being catbarf is pretty funny when you're the one not actually reading my posts. I
said I'd played the game- scroll up, genius. The entire gameplay mechanic is idiotic. Running away from your enemies gets fucking
tedious after a while and the whole thing is exactly what I'd predicted: a morass of QTE. PRESS A TO WIN

Keep in mind there is no such thing in Shattered Memories. The only difference between normal and icy Silent Hill is that one of them has monsters to evade with questionable controls and mechanics. Ice just comes off as an arbitrary decision for an nightmarish world.
It doesn't help that they took the awesome siren away.

It's not just one chapter, I believe there are a couple more later on. Really, just about every time Navidson and Co. get truly and deeply lost in the labyrinth, the formatting goes funky like that.
