Have you
played P.T.?
If by played you mean pushed the thumb stick and watched things happen, yes.

Well, OK then.

To be fair, it was a clever concept and a cool little haunted house corridor crawl. Haunted houses are fun.
I just didn't see the relevance to the game it was advertising.

There was more to it than that. It's been a while since I played it but iirc there was some sort of a puzzle with a refrigerator hanging from the ceiling? And the game does supposedly have hidden depths that only a few people have managed to unlock. Not that I'd blame you if you stopped playing before you got to any of that stuff. Sure the game had a nice, nightmareish tone, but most of the scares came in the form of one unpleasant, unavoidable jumpscare after the next. Honestly, I didn't like it very much either. I mean, I like a lot of what it did. I just didn't like
actually playing it.

I kinda agree with the sentiment that its hard to see how you make a game out of something like that though. Most of what's interesting about it are to do with it being this insane purgatorial loop.
But maybe that's not the point.
Still I think given that it was a pretty interesting little surprise and puzzle with a surprising amount of depth, maybe they don;t need to make a "game" as such. Just do more of those kinds of things.
I guess they won't now, in any case.

For me the important part about PT was the restraint it showed. It had the most promise I've seen in a long while of the series taking a direction back towards Silent Hill 2 AKA the peak of the series.

So if P.T. was supposed to be a demo for Silent Hills then they were really just making big budget horror Gone Home? I'm really having trouble seeing how great of a loss this actually is.

It's fine to have a psychological horror game once in a while. Something more like Amnesia than Resident Evil. And I know the Gone Home comparison was probably meant to be disparaging, but Gone Home had a pretty good atmosphere for its budget.

It was a thematic teaser, not a demo of the actual gameplay. The full game would have been closer to earlier SH games - third person, combat, puzzles, all that.
