I used a bunch of lights to simulate an (
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/FM:T2_Midday_Eclipse_-_Sxerks) eclipse, so depending on the the size of the area you could have wrap-around lights in the sky and turn certain ones on/off. But like AntiMatter said the skybox would be the other problem.

Now, by "skybox," you're defining the 6-panel artwork? Or are you referring to a normal (non-texture) sky, where the celestial1 graphic cannot be animated over time? The only workaround would be some cheesy hack sky object that would require a lot of smoke and mirrors to pull off.
