I just completed my sortie into the Opera House and Boy it was a doozie
It was funny, scary, frustrating, heartpounding and wow I didn’t waste any breath or shed any tears killin guards that stuck lotsa arrows in me. Thankfully there is a LOT of healing potions to be found there!
This level SO reminded me of the bank level from Thief 2
All the marble floors
Steps echoing down the hallway
I couldn’t do ANYthing without starting the conga-line of guards after me
Yowch
Finding the spiders dead and the craymen and then the lone opera singer hermit in the caves was awesome. That’s the first time they’ve actually let you get your mission FROM a character in the game.
Was a welcome touch. Loved all the reds and purples and textures they used. The wide open theatre complete with patrons, the back stage area and catwalk. Was perfect. SO many secret passageways and THAT’S the key. Once I found the secret passageways the level was busted wide open and I got the talisman of air quite quickly after that. Of course I had fun too by knocking out lady valarias and jumping down into the theatre and dragging her body onstage. Won’t SHE be surprised when she wakes up. She’ll see she’s the star of a new play called “My opera house has just been robbed, my guards murdered, and I look the fool!” Even knocked out the music teacher during his lesson. Had to chase him down though. I love it when my victims run. Makes it more of a game.
Whee

It's one of my favourite levels in the first Thief. Terri did a remarkable job at creating a suspensful and challenging, but constantly fun level. I love to run around the whole place just because of all the nice architecture. And I love to tease the Craymen in the caverns : "Chirpi-chirpi-chirrrrppp-wrrrrrooorrrr !" *slashes craydude with his sword* :ebil: :cheeky: ;)
And Raoul rocks !!! :cheeky:

Raoul is voiced by the same actor that does Garrett, Karras, Benny, and many more. And yeah I love that mission too. :thumb::cheeky:

Yeah, and if you pay attention to Raoul speaking, you can actually recognize Russel's accent slipping at times back to his usual voice (which he uses for voicing Garrett). ;)

Love it!
Heh heh, yeah...Raoul is pretty memorable and fairly well-liked as a character. :D But don't forget:
In TDP/Gold, Cutty told you about the Horn of Quintus, The Eye told you about the Keeper Grotto and started on your way to getting the Lost City Key and Talismans, Brothers Murus and Renault helped you get out of the Haunted Cathedral grounds, the Hammers asked for their High Priest and Builder's Chisel to fight back the Trickster's hordes and so they could help you foil his Dark Project.
In TMA, Basso asked you to free Jenivere.
In TDS, Lauryl asks you for help and helps you escape The Cradle and reveals Gamall.

All the marble floors
... but many of them have carpets, and you can usually jump across the gaps in these.

But they don't enter the secret passages, usually.

When I'm playing this level, it's not raining cats and dogs, but guards.:ebil: I love to throw them from the balconies and cause all the noble idiots to wet their trousers and run around crying for help.:thumb:

Victoria and Constantine send Garrett to fetch the sword, and the talismans in Thief. In Thief 2, Victoria tells him to steal plans from Angelwatch and more or less forces him to go to Soulforge in the end. And so on, and so on... However, in
Songs of the Caverns, we probably see a person in-game directly changing objectives for the first time. On the other hand,
the killers in Assassins almost did the same thing...:)
So, it's not as special as it may at first appear.

Hahaha.
Yeah, I avoided all the characters that don't verbally give mission objectives to you specifically, to your face, while in the game, not in notes, not while eavesdropping, not in briefings and cutscenes, and not from a forced change of plans due to circumstances alone. I also avoided the fences and stores pointing you elsewhere, and the little requests, such as Gravid the Kurshok asking you to open the cage and getting the map to the Citadel.

I remember when playing Songs of the Cavern for the first time that I spent ages crouched in shadow in front of Raoul. Not because I liked his singing that much - no, because I tried to figure out a way to get past him whithout him seeing me...
I scoured the cave and the water again and again thinking I had missed a route around that creepy guy.
Boy, did I feel silly when I found out that you had to speak to him. :joke:
