Thanks, Voodoo47. I donated $10 to the gang at TurboSquid and bought some skyboxes in PNG format. Here's the result (images were downsized and enhanced a bit for clarity and compatibility:

As soon as I dropped back into the game and re-loaded the skybox, the top was all screwed up as before! So I went back and used PSP instead of IrfanView. This time, nothing went wrong.
So either there's a problem with how IV manages images, or else a plug-in is needed, or something else is wonky.
BTW, the tracks and locomotive in the shot were made by LarryG.
Edit: All previous skies D/L'd were either jpg or tga. Used IV to convert them to PNG. Looked like crap. Went back and converted one using PSP and didn't have the strange artifacts, so it's definitely something to do with IrfanView.

I'm using gimp for all the edits and conversion that I do (which is not too many, admittedly). no screwups so far.

I downloaded the Miramar skybox, and it looks fine. It must have somehow got screwed up in the conversion from TGA to PNG. The original TGAs don't even have alpha channels.

Sorry the intrusion: could you help me figure out how to get a 2048 x 2048 sky with Gimp?

First, the original resolution must be 2048x2048. Don't take a 256x256 (or other) and resize it larger; you'll only get crap.
