Dethtoll - worth giving SubJeff benefit of the doubt, non?
This place could do without people not getting personal so much.
Critique the words, not the person.

I was expecting the combat to be a lot like that in Batman, high on style but not very challenging. That notion was disproved right in the first proper mission. I had to retry it 10 times or so because I kept getting my ass whooped fighting a dude with a crowbar and 2 guys with knives. Damn that was hard! Fun though, trying out different tactics every time and seeing how I could approach that fight. The driving isn't bad either. They've taken a page from the book that Vin Diesel wrote by copying the car-slamming mechanics of Wheelman. And it works.
Best of all though, is the city. I love the ambiance of nighttime Hong Kong. I spent the better part of my playsession simply driving and walking around. Just walking down a sidewalk lined with neon signs, going into an around-the-clock cornerstore to buy a soda, then when you go back out to the street it starts raining and everything looks magical. As the rain dries up in the early morning hours you've made your way to the marketplace and sleepy eyed merchants are setting up their stands for the day. An unusually energetic vendor insists you buy a pork bun. I already love this city.

I mainlined through this after Christmas. Enjoyed it immensely. In a lot of ways it's the game that I was expecting Mafia to be, in that it's a large, open, and realistic world. You have story missions, and there's no completely absurd side craziness like in Saints Row or GTA, but when you're not doing a story mission you can just wander around and look at stuff, or buy a pork bun, or do a street race, unlike in Mafia where you're just immediately shepherded through the missions.

Would you say it's a little more like Mafia 2 then?
EvaUnit02 on 14/1/2013 at 23:20
Considering that Mafia 2 is more of the same, a linear story set in an open world (non-existent sandbox), nope.

There is absurd craziness to do in GTA?

A notorious carjacker doing ambulance rescue missions?

Just did the Club Bam Bam mission and had to retry it over 20 times before I beat it. Jeeeeesus Christ the combat is hard. I do like it though, reminds me of Oni, but with Urban Chaos' directional kicks and The Warriors' environmental attacks mixed in.

Ouch. That's enough to make me skip -- I don't have the patience.
