I think that small touches and details can add immensely to the feel of a game. What kind of things could be added or improved upon?
More in the way of bullet marks on walls, and scorch marks from explosions. This would increase the feel of fire fights, and make the player feel more immersed in the world and able to affect their surroundings. (More decals). Side effects? It might look silly to have characters completely ignoring the scorch marks from a GEP inside the middle of a military base.
Any more?

How 'bout silent alarms? Or at least take out the "Alarm activated" message on the HUD. It would have been more fun to saunter into an area, only to find out that that sniper you picked off earlier had alerted everybody and there they were, just itching for targets.
