Hopefully not old hat. I had a wee look. Procrastinating over an essay, I discovered this.

Figured it would be appreciated here!
I can't see it catching on. Who wants to smell, I don't know, Dead Space (corpsy!), Bioshock (fishy) or Stalker (radioactivy!)?. Next step will surely a massive boxing glove that punches you when you get shot in a game or something :laff:
Didn't listen to the sound in the video - computer I'm using doesn't have speakers, so can't really be sure how accurate it all is

You can't smell radiation. That's part of the reason it's dubbed the "silent killer."

I remember reading about something like this a few years ago. It's not that new. But I guess it's the sort of tech that takes its time being developed.
I thought this topic was going to be on a smell mechanic actually in the game. I know hunting sims use smell, so you have to approach animals keeping them upwind of you, or they'll smell you and run off. Or in the more exotic ones, you have to pay attention to what's downwind of you because there could also be predators hunting you.

Och i was taking the piss :P
Though surely the effects the radiation has on the area, and the life within it, would cause a bit of a whiff. I can't imagine The Zone smells lovely in any case :laff:

Now it's just the System Shock people, but with this technology, between the fish and the corpses, NO ONE would be able to play Bioshock without puking.

"LISTEN! ... you
smell something?" - Ray Stanz

It'll open the door to a whole new generation of immersive sims. Just imagine in Deus Ex 3:
"Did you smell something?"
"Naah, must have been a homeless guy"
