That's the thing though, even as the quote is ending, the guard is still not sure where the stench is coming from.
To me, "that cant be me, I washed a few days ago" is obviously tongue in cheek. It is a comical attempt on the guards part to justify the smell. For example, if he had said "I washed this morning..." it would be different.

Considering that Garrett tends to move about in sewage water, hang out with corpses and crawl through all kinds of places with smells we can't even begin to imagine, i'm quite sure that the stink comes from Garrett. :)

One guard quote, in all of the games...
One guard who can smell him...
One guard to sniff Garrett out...
And in the darkness, cut him.

I agree with ZB. If the comment were meant to be about Garrett, it would be an alert level 1 comment, but it's spoken only at alert 0, which means the AI isn't supposed to be suspicious about anything.

I've always taken it to be the guard talking about himself. I think it's just supposed to be a comical line that you can overhear when the guards are not alerted, just like many of the other comments/sounds the guards make when they are bored from patrolling for hours on end.

What is it with these awkward, long debates on what a character said or implied?

What is it with every time I read one of your posts I wish it was literally possible to beat sense into people?

Dunno, but this thread is running it's course.
Ultimately, the point is that the guards offhand self-meditated comment is up to individual debate. Like how I think it to simply be him smelling himself... But maybe it is Garrett... Dunno, but do we really need to discuss it?

It's amazing that it made it this far.
