It does raise the question, if you didn't know the game mechanics, if there could be a mechanic where scent matters to the guard's state. I think they have that in some hunting sims, where you have to stay downwind of the game or they'll smell you and run off.
I'll go out on a limb and just say it's probably too stupid for the FPSneaker genre to bother thinking much about, though. It'd be like guards seeing your shadow or silhouette, more trouble than it's worth.

The problem is that you'd have no way of representing smell to the player unless you had massive immersion-breaking coloured clouds or something. And with no visual representation of whether you smelled bad, any gameplay based on it would seem random and frustrating.
