I was just looking at this surprisingly good-looking (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/06/09/sniper-sniper-er-trailering-bright-sorry) trailer for City Interactive's upcoming "Sniper: Ghost Warrior" FPS.
Rebellion's "Sniper Elite" is well-regarded, but that one has pretty much stood alone as far as critically-acclaimed sniper games go. It'll be interesting to see if CI's effort comes out well. In the meantime, it's definitely on my radar.

Counter Strike has a sniper rifle.

FarCry has the best sniper rifle in an FPS, save for Sniper Elite.

All guns in Red Faction are sniper rifles.

MDK had a sniper rifle too, along with a large proportion of the games produced since. I was really hoping, however, to limit this thread to games in which the challenge of hitting a target is something more than just waiting for a randomised "sway" of your cross-hairs to line up on the target.
Something which could reasonably be called a Sniper simulation, in other words. Maybe I should change the title to that...
(Far Cry is pretty awesome, mind :)
Um, how do the ARMA games stack up here? Red Orchestra, maybe? My recollection of Ghost Recon is that it was a bit lacking in this department, and that was hardcore for its time, so I'm not sure this sub-genre has all that much in the way of notable history.

Forget about sniperrifles, check out that grappling hook! :D
Here's hoping you can't just use it on predetermined grappling points though.

Pretty much 75% of all fps games have sniper rifles.
Crysis had a pretty damn good one. Most of that game is spent snipering people and then hiding.

Sniper rifles beget SniperDudez.
You may find examples of SniperDudez in the wild with names such as ->El1te Sn1p3r F0xx 532<-.
I hate SniperDudez.

Red Orchestra yes. Sniping with or without a scope is very tough compared to any other game I've played because of the realistic ballistics. Nothing quite like learning how to lead a moving target dependant on distance.
