In my current mission I have used snow as the ground texture. I've also used it on other outside surfaces such as steps and roofs. The snow texture looks more like wallpaper than it does a lumpy substance. Has anyone developed any techniques that make snow look more realistic?

Not I, but I did download some snow and ice textures. You are welcome to peruse them if you want me to share them with you. I honestly can't remember where or how I got them, so you might already have them. I believe the original title of the file is "Snow&Ice," I got it along with other custom textures similarly grouped (ie Church&Fortress). PM me if you want a look-see.

First thing I'd do is make a texture out of a render cloud, setting the contrast so it's mostly pure white, with only the barest hint of lumpiness. For added flavor, you could use a cubemap with an alpha to fake a specular, giving your snow a faint, icy glow.

Changing the footstep sound on snow to more realistic one would be good idea too.

Don't apply a "lumpy" texture to a non-lumpy surface. You're fighting the engine instead of working with it. Your ground surfaces are smooth, so apply a smooth texture. Something more like (

That looks pretty good Zylonbane! :)
The problem I have with snow is that there really isn't a way to apply it to adjacent facings of brushes like steps and have it look like snow wasn't painted on. Instead of having sharp edges there should be rounded edges on adjacent facings.
Caradavin I'll let you know if I decide to step away from the default snow textures. :)
gigagooga thanks! I'll check that sound file out.
