I don't even know why I said Finest Hour. I haven't even played it. Sorry.

Treyarch just isn't very good at level design. I played a bit of World at War (technically not 5, IW decided to save numbers for actual good games), and it's decent, considering how it follows the basic Call of Duty formula without having clunky and slow controls like the other Treyarch Call of Duty's. But it's clear that Treyarch simply can't create encounters that match up to Infinity Ward from what I played.
Also, yes, Call of Duty 3 was a steaming pile of poo. NOW WITH AWESOME CONTROLS SO YOU CAN FEEL LIKE YOU'RE ROWING A BOAT!!!!

Then why is the official title for CoD 6, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2"?

I haven't got 5 either
(thought the Beta MP looked cheesy and actually older than COD4...), but was interesting to find Steven Spielberg plays COD4 and discusses lack the of story line in some games
(which I agree with)

Do you play games on your own?
I play a lot of action games. I go into the store and find a game that looks compelling, or I get one that one of the folks at EA suggests I try, and I take it home and I play it. There have been a lot of games, including all the sequels for Medal of Honor, that I've really admired. I love the direction it's taken. I also like the competitive games. I'm currently playing Call of Duty 4. A lot of these first person shooters are very interesting.
You know the thing that doesn't work for me in these games are the little movies where they attempt to tell a story in between the playable levels. That's where there hasn't been a synergy between storytelling and gaming. They go to a lot of trouble to do these [motion-capture] movies that explain the characters. And then the second the game is returned to you and it's under your control, you forget everything the interstitials are trying to impact you with, and you just go back to shooting things. And that has not found its way into a universal narrative. And I think more has to be done in that arena.

In the Thief games IMO, you really feel like you're playing as Garrett and even though some of the levels didn't seem to fit the storyline as well as others - you still felt like you were on a quest as Garrett himself...:D
Even Gordon in the Half Life games didn't feel anywhere near as immersing as Garrett. IMO, it seems like a lot of game devs
(can only comment on the games I've played - which is most of the majors) still haven't learned the LGS legacy of drawing the player into the game like they did. :thumb:

I wasn't aware of the next official title. But technically, neither this nor the next game are 5 or 6, right (considering how if you count each game we're on like 8 or 9)?
That's where I really think Call of Duty 4 pushed forward. Employees from Bungie have stated that there's a lot to learn from Infinity Ward in terms of scripting. Half-life 2 really helped scripted events, but I think Call of Duty 4 is really starting to master it. IMO developers rely on cutscenes because they convey emotion best, but the more we can transfer those emotions into ingame scenes, the more immersive games will become.

In game cutscenes aren't really anything new, Ocarina of Time was really one of the first games that did it famously.
EDIT: wow I really misread what you said, yeah scripted sequences have already been the strength of COD in my opinion.

The last gen console/hand-held spin-offs and United Offensive don't count as sequels.

Just finished CoD5 and it was identical to CoD4. So I have no idea how can you cum about one and piss about the other.

I must have missed the part of CoD4 where I spent more time throwing grenades back at people than firing my gun.

I must have missed that part in CoD5!
