So I called EA about "disk checks". - by lost_soul

If Asperger's actually existed(and wasn't just another psycho-excuse for failing at life) then yeah, it would be pretty damning.
And only PA would be dumb enough to equate "browsing the internet" with "having constant internet connection just to play an SP game"
Who would have thought that Koki was the one shitting on autistic people. Oh wait...
This forum seems like such a shithole from time to time.

Lost soul is not a one man's struggle against a greedy mega corporation. It is one man's struggle against
reality.Quote Posted by Koki
If Asperger's actually existed
I met people with it and, let me tell you, it sure as heck exists. It may not be a traditional curable disease but more of a brain-wiring fuckup, but once you meet someone with the syndrome, you just know.

How has it been "trampled into the ground"?
Go read Yakoob's post again a few more times,
slowly. Maybe the point will click for you.

I paid fair and square for a product and was never told that it was encrypted.
It's common sense to most people with a working brain that companies want to protect their intellectual property from piracy, hence DRM. There's been DRM in place in games since the fucking 1980's, it should be a reasonable expectation. Those of us who in the real world know that concessions have to be made sometimes and usually certain minor annoyances have to be tolerated... but we also know that in a lot of cases DRM can be bypassed easily.
But that's besides the point. WHY was CD media used so heavily back in the 1990s? Because it gave them more storage capabilities than any other form of media back then. In consumer electronics, CD-ROM was king of storage space and Hard Disk Drive had much smaller capacity and were a lot more expensive than they are today. Thus games of the era would've been designed to take advantage of the medium which offered them the most space. Need For Speed 3 in particular had its music soundtrack stored in read-book audio and streamed it off the CD.
Do you remember that games back then also offered different size installations, to accommodate the amount disc space people might've had? Eg picking a "Lite" installation for a game might've meant that as little as possible was installed onto the HDD and the rest was streamed off the CD. I remember my older brother buying a 8GB HDD in 1996 and him being blown away by how much space it offered.

I was also never told that I would be required to keep a disk in the drive.
Bullshit, the manual or the game installer would've told you in most cases if the disc was
required for data streaming purposes.Quote:
Now that technology has progressed to a point where I could take my small computer anywhere and enjoy my games, this is a problem. The consumer has no option here.
Wake up and take a snort of reality, PC GAMES ARE DESIGNED FOR HARDWARE AND OPERATING SYSTEMS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE CONTEMPORARY TIMES. You'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to realistically expect future proofing and/or feel that it's an entitlement.

This is an example of the industry's hatred toward its honest customers and I would jump with joy to see another game industry crash like the one that occurred in the 80s.
Again, go reread Yakoob's post and have a good long, hard think about it.

Is it ok to insult people with suspected mental illnesses these days? I'm not very clued up on internet decorum.
EvaUnit02 on 11/8/2011 at 19:20
I'm blown away that people are actually white knighting Lost_soul.
Have you read some of the infuriating shit that he spews on a regular basis? See dethtoll's link where L_S equates the "fight against corporate restrictions" with fucking civil rights movements. Fucking Christ, is that insulting.

If we had cars that miraculously never got in accidents and people were still stupid enough to buy the ones that randomly accelerate and vier in one direction then yes, it is their fault... just like we have games that don't require the user to contact a third-party to function.
Bottom line, if you buy a defective product that requires remote attestation to function, don't complain when it stops working. Those of us who value our rights to control our property will just point and laugh.
It just never stops.
DaBeast on 11/8/2011 at 19:27
I doubt the first line should be taken seriously. Maybe he's just very passionate about it and unlike the vast majority of people who bitch and moan about drm and say "I'll boycott this blah blah", but cave in and purchase on release he actually sticks by what he believes.
Whether or not I agree with him is irrelevant, he's another user sharing opinions in a reasonable enough way. i.e. he isn't resorting to shit flinging or ganging up on someone he dislikes
lost_soul on 11/8/2011 at 19:28
@EvaUnit02: So now I'm supposed to use x-ray vision to read the manual *before* I buy something? Also, have you found a way to read through an installer's prompts before opening the package or buying it in the first place? That must be pure magic!
The publishers didn't start indicating these requirements on games up until about 2003 or so... on tiny print on the box which you don't see if you shop online.
EvaUnit02 on 11/8/2011 at 19:34
1. (
http://www.replacementdocs.com/)
2. Gee I dunno, maybe download the game ISO, mount it in a virtual drive, then the read EULA and/or examine the first few steps of installation? (Of course you shouldn't actually play the pirated game.)
Common sense is certainly magic, ain't it?!

@DaBeast: Shit flinging aside, the sheer number of times he's brought this and similar points up on this board doesn't reek of 'passion' to me, it reeks of sheer close-minded obsession. He finds comfort in complaining about the same things over and over again - maybe because his mind can only process very little else, in which case I'd pity him, but we don't know, so I'm going to have to assume he's just the average phenomenal forum ass.
You can have your opinion, but repeatedly hammering people's heads in with it while also being an annoying, obnoxious* and whiney twat depletes any reserves of patience or good-will I might ever have had for him, and I don't think I'm just speaking for myself here.
* "I hope the games industry crashes and burns again like in the 80s because DISC CHECK" is only the latest example of which.

At Sulphur: my point in creating this topic was to let people know that EA is may be patching this stuff out of the old games, so if carrying around a CD drive, and a floppy drive, and (in the future) a mobile net connection to authenticate and play games on your portable PC that will have terabytes of storage bothers you, you should also speak up.
