I got the new 120 Gb model. As a lifelong PC gamer, I kept putting it further and further off, but decided to just go ahead with it. I'll still play the majority of my games on the PC (Fallout 3 GOTY is preordered), but I will check some PS3 games out as well, and already got myself NHL 10 and Street Fighter 4. Haven't had much time to play yet, but looks like it's gonna be fun. Just gotta get used to the controls. I can't imagine playing FPS games with the controller though.
But the reason I'm posting this is to ask what games I should look into getting, having never played a console game in about 15 years or so. I'll probably get Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed (both), having played them on the PC. I think they should play nicely on the PS3. What else?

Assassin's Creed is not a terribly great PS3 port. It exhibits some amount of vaseline blur and framerate issues. Mirror's Edge is all right, though I'm not sure why you'd want it again; the PC version looks better with AA (and PhysX acc if your PC can do it), and I suppose you'd be much more comfortable playing it with a mouse and keyboard, going by what you said about FPSes.
Anyway, if you want the really good stuff -
* Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (action-adventure)
* Valkyria Chronicles (Strategy RPG)
* MGS4 (graphics tech demo+exposition overload+wonderful game once it reins its movie aspirations in and lets you play it)
* Little Big Planet (cutesy platforming/level creating)
* Siren: Blood Curse (survival horror)
* Wipeout HD/Fury (very pretty futuristic racing, one of the best PSN games once you get how it works)
* InFamous (third-person parkour-riffing open-world electric super hero bopping)
Tons more shit I'm sure, I'll let the others pick it up from there. I seem to have listed all the PS3 exclusives out for some reason while looking at the shelf.
You may also want to pick up Uncharted 2 when it releases on Oct 13. It's probably one of the biggest reasons to own a PS3 at the mo'.

I'd be careful with that - the story is buildt strongly on the previous games. I'd think that someone who doesn't know the series would have a hard time telling what the fuck is going on.

You're right about that. I sort of slotted in the assumption that everyone would have played MGS by now. MGS4 would play great but the story would be one hell of a mish-mash without a basic familiarity with the series. (Keeping aside the matter that it's a bit of a mish-mash regardless, of course)
I'd suggest playing MGS1 first on the PS3, in that case, and then moving onto 2/3 if the return of PS2 emulation is in the cards (as the recent Sega rumour doing the rounds has it).

I did hear something along the lines of Sony phasing out the PS2 and putting PS2 games up on the PSN for download.
And yes, I never played any MGS.

Then, as Sulphur said, you should wait for them to be available for PS3 and play the series in order, for the best experience. :)

Or just watch the cutscenes at YouTube. You will lose a bit, but not much.

there are complete walkthroughs including videos for all MGS games on youtube. better than cutscenes only

Pardon the noob question, but can you download full (old) games for free from the PSN, or just demos for new releases?

Actually, the way I did it (which is not necessarily recommended), was to play MGS1-2 on the PC, and watch MGS3: Existence on youtube. This was enough to enjoy MGS4 (which I also watched on youtube). Though later I actually played MGS3, and it's definitely worth playing.
