It's not the easiest of games, maybe not the best choice for getting the hang of it, kicked my ass many a time even on the lowest difficulty. It is good though

And on my 106-inch screen via HD projector it's pretty immersive :)

I must be a rare, rare case. I was a hardcore PC FPS player for ages. Those are my roots. I was John Carmacks bitch. And yet, ever since I gave console FPS a try, I've been in love with console pad FPSing. Perhaps it started when I played MP games on the console and realized that despite the handicap it's a shared handicap and thus everyone is on the same playing field.
You have to understand though that after so many years of FPS gaming on the PC, I grew tired of the near instant reflex ability. Quake 3 railgun matches et al. It was worth with Counterstrke, I guess. I like the added difficulty and the smoothness of the analog sticks in an FPS. It always bugged me that the look around speed in a PC FPS is instant. Makes me feel like some omniscient floating orb, which is what you are basically. The analog feel to the looking makes you feel more human, so does that lack of pinpoint click-on-icon accuracy of a mouse. Mouse FPS's never felt so much like "taking aim" rather than "instantly locking on target with your eyes and firing in that direction". And while that may be the way it works for Apache minigun turrets..... Especially since the advent of the "aim" button, "taking aim" feels more more intuitive and natural on a gamepad.
Anyway, put me down as one of the weird ones that actually likes the way it feels on a gamepad. Put me down as one of the odd ones that thinks it takes more skill to be good at a console FPS than it does a PC FPS. Put me down as one of the crazy ones that swears there are console FPS games that are as fast and as hectic (or more) than PC FPSs (because that's one of the arguments I've heard.)

Still Operation Flashpoint nailed it, really felt like taking aim.

I think what he is describing pretty much nails the thing I hate about twitch FPSs. You have 100% energy, you enemy has 10%. But he gets that pixel perfect twitch shot whilst bouncing around like a goon and its game over. Too gamey.
At least with the FPS "sims", like OpFlash, Red Orchestra, there is some leveling of difficulty. When I lose there I feel like I've been outplayed, not that I didn't take enough 'phets and bounce fast enough.

Pin-point aim is unrealistic, but a less handy controller is hardly the solution. That's the sort of issue you address with dynamic targetting crosshairs and firing spread, like in STALKER and DX. In those games, you turn
yourself instantly with the mouse, but your weapon takes a bit to be accurate. The faster you move or turn, the more longer it takes to steady your aim. So you still look exactly where you want to look, like in real life, but your weapon isn't laser-guided to that point and requires effort to aim, also like in real life.
For the purpose of looking around I don't see any problem with the very quick response of the mouse since it is pretty much like your own head, for small turns, or your body, if you wanna turn on your heels and look behind you.

I have to disagree. I hate conditional aim situations, with the analog sticks this is solved directly. You. have. to. aim. And on top of that, those gamepad games do the same thing anywho.

Also, any suggestion for must-have demos to download from the PSN?
SubJeff on 14/10/2009 at 22:39
Just try 'em all. They're free after all. I got Dirt 2, Killzone, Resistance, UFC, Batman, Mirrors Edge, Katamari Forever. And some others. Heck, there are so many you'll waste your life away. Oh yeah, Condemned 2. I forget. So many demos...
