The first one doesn't make any sense: all I see is 'GRXIHRM', and the second is even less decipherable.

Just kidding. The way you're supposed to do them is relax your eyes so the patterns match up going out -- but my eye muscles don't just relax on cue like that; can't even imagine how they could -- so the only way I can do it is physically crossing my eyes so the patterns match up going in, which is a snap to do, but then the whole 3D thing is inverted, outies turn into innies. Which is probably why I have to sit and stare at them for so long to figure them out and it can take me 5 hours to go through a book. Wish they made these things for the way I do it...

Never worked for me. I can cross eyes on command but that never seems to do anything? How long do I have to stare that way?

There's a repeating pattern in all of these. So all you have to do is pick one and cross your eyes until its counterpart overlaps with it, like two yellow flowers in that first pic or two purple boxes in the second. As soon as they perfectly overlap the 3D part instantly jumps out. Haha, I remember having this exact same discussion in high school circa 1991.

You also have to get the right distance. Your eyes can be crossed, its all a blur and then you move forwards or backward til it appears.
I can't actually cross my eyes, I just let them relax and become unfocused.
