Also, why does Adobe feel the need to start Acrobat and it's updater at boot time?
More to the point, why does everyone nowdays? If you've ever had to help out the olds (or the young for that matter) who've buggered up their low end computers, first port of all is usually improve performance by shutting off one hundred little updaters and residents for every single piece of pre installed shovelware.
When they think how wildly convenient it is to do this in their wonderful software, they don't think that there might be more than one thing with the same idea.

Yet IE is still the most popular browser. What does this say about people in general (that we didn't already know)?

That people who don't know much about computers aren't aware of the different options they have to choose from on that thing they don't know much about? If they don't know about it, they're gonna use what they get. Both the dumb, and the uninformed yet otherwise intelligent, fall into this category. It doesn't say much about anybody.
It's like I don't understand the vast majority of maths that surround quantum mechanics. Neither do retards. Does that make me retarded by proxy?
edit: the answer is yes. Yes it does.
