Sure, lots of us played the games as they were released. Personally, I remember seeing some screenshots and a small preview of TDP in a UK games magazine; the concept of a "stealth engine" struck me as a brilliant idea.
Got myself a copy as soon as it hit the shelves, and it quickly became apparent, while wandering around Bafford's mansion, that there had never been anything like this game, before.
It was kind of a rush to get in on a game that good before the whole world knew about it, actually. Ah, nostalgia! :D

I agree with TBM except on the points I quoted above.
Garrett apparently was unaware of Karras' involvement with his mechanical eye until Karras told him in Soulforge. Even if Garrett were to give that level of gratitude (which he would not: "I just saved the world, yourself included"), he wouldn't know who to ally with.
How would Karras have access to the Keeper prophecies? Even if he did, prophecies tend to be pretty vague ("Iron trees? Not in my part of town.") so there's no guarantee he'd interpret them correctly. "Destiny and danger still center on the one who is both brethren and betrayer" is not a clear prediction of Garrett's victory over Karras. But prophecy and its uses (or lack thereof) is a whole other discussion.
Don
In reverse order:
I said naught about Karras having access to the prophecies. But, the Keepers did make reference to the pending problem, and kept pushing Garrett into some action against it.
Garrett would know from whom he got the mechanical eye. It did not appear in his head magically overnight while he slept.
The "renegade" Mechanist order had its roots in the Hammerite mechanics, and Karras became a leading figure in the promotion and spread of the Mechanists and the subsequent vilification of the Hammerite creed.
Garrett was "neutral" in so far as favoring Pagan, Mech, or Hammer religions. He treated all with equal disdain.

Being as your knowledge about
the topic is limited due to your lack of information from the first game (TDP), I suggest you listen.
You really don't have the necessary to further the topic, unless you want to throw speculation into it.
Err, are you talking to me or someone else? I've played through T:DP multiple times before, as I have the game. So I'm fully with the Thief storyline. But I'm enjoying the speculation here, as it's making the whole "Why Is Karras Against Garrett" idea more clearer.

Relax, that was aimed at me.
And despite "not being qualified" I stand by my comments above: Karras really isn't against Garrett until late in TMA, because of the event earlier in TMA.

I consider The Sword the worst mission ever....
I consider it one of the best. Not
the best, but it's way up there in my book. As the first to ghost The Sword, I have a special nostalgia for it. I suppose you didn't like Escape, either. Same thing with that. :) It really depends on how you approach it whether the game play in those missions is fun or tedious. And, as you say, to each his own.
Anyway, it is too bad, in a way, that not everyone has had the opportunity to play the Thief games in order. My first run through The Dark Project was a life-changing experience. I repeated that 4-5 times (nothing else to play), and here I am still playing Thief seven years later! TDP / Gold remains my favorite.
Sorry to be off topic. :)

[QUOTE='Nancy [BTBT];1522440']Does the world really know about Thief?Just a figure of speech, Nancy, to show how I felt at the time. Once I discovered TTLG, some three or four years later, I realised how absurd that way of thinking was.
This ground has been well-covered in old threads. You can do a search if you want to canvas opinion further.
