So most people like FMs that essentially are 3d point and click classic adventures? - by zajazd

I respectfully disagree. As long as they're well written, I love readables, even if they're a few pages. I've always loved reading all the extra optional lore in games, e.g., the elder scrolls.
When a vital clue is hidden in a long and rambly diary though, that is a bit irritating.
Perhaps it might be a good idea to label lore books as such. For instance, there are three books of lore in Impious Pilgrimage. I suppose I could add (lore) after the title so folks who hate reading will know they don't have to.

I wonder, is there at least a single mission that managed to be loved by everybody? I mean, loved in such a way that nobody has a single negative thing to say about it. I don't think so.

One thing hasn't improved with readables: length.
I like long readables. The funnier the better.
Thief has always been about reading something.
But as always, it's a matter of taste.

There are many nitpicking players who want their money back.
I suggested some of them to make their own mission. But they can't do anything at all. Except ranting, moaning and being lazy. They feel better this way.

Absolutely. And you can always update the objectives or add a note when player frobs a scroll or a book that is vital to the story.

I really don't like this idea that you can't criticize something if you don't do anything yourself. Let people criticize missions even if they don't make them. The opinion of a player who is not familiar with DromEd at all is just as valuable as the opinion of someone who has released a few missions already.

I make a point of having plot-related readables be no longer than 2 pages, when possible.

Nobody claimed this.
But there are some players that can't do anything but whining. I wouldn't take them seriously.

I agree completely, though I don't think anyone said exactly that in this thread. Una just said he suggested to some of them that they make their own missions.
But you're right, the vast majority of players aren't mission authors, and most have never opened Dromed, probably. They are the people who play our missions. They are entitled to criticize them. If fact, I think most authors wish they would do so more often, as long as it's constructive.

Of course, of course, comments like this are in no way meant to be dismissive of criticism.
If I ever finish anything with DromEd, I would hope I don't respond to criticism in such a thin-skinned manner as demonstrated by some of the posts in this thread. This is why certain talented authors post more over at RPGCodex in the Thief FM thread. The environment here is way too soft and supportive a lot of the time, and it's going to prevent some people from growing as level designers.

I thought the readables in Morbid Curiosity were very well done. I actually looked for stuff to read when I was immersed in the mission.
I wish I could remember the name of the FM some taffer did. He was hoping to become a published author, and tried promoting his FM based on the readables. They all made up one long-winded and tedious tale. But, there were some players who thought it was great.
