I've recently gotten into games revolving around using a stealth element, so I figured thief would be an interesting game to play, so I'd like to ask this. Can someone tell me a bit about Thief in general?

Thief: The Dark Project. A wonderful title indeed. Thief was the cumulative masterpiece developed by Looking Glass Studios. LGS made its name in the earliest 90's with true first person adventures such as Ultima Underworld and System Shock.
Thief sums all of this up in a first person sneaker. Not only the *first* of its kind, but also the best. There are no menus to complicate the straightforward gameplay. The gameplay takes place in first person. Those two things combined make Thief excellent.
Thief is different than other Stealth titles in the world it uses to deliver the story. It is a medieval-type world where "magic and technology coexist uneasily", borrowing heavily from the golden age of crpg/Ultima. If you are into rpgs, you will absolutely love Thief.
I cannot say enough good things about this title. Avoid Deadly shadows and stick with Dark Project.

and also if youre into rpgs, check out your local game outposts and see if you can find a copy of the "Ultima Collection", youll need something like DosBox to run them, but they are the best rpg series out there.
as for Thief, it is an absolutely beautiful game. i wouldnt avoid Deadly Shadows alltogether tho, just play the other 2 first. it really puts things into perspective.

No, don't avoid Deadly Shadows. You might like it, you might not, but at least *try* it and decide for yourself.

Frankly I was planning on ignoring Goldmoon when he said that considering that, regardless of the game, if I get into the first one, I end up feeling a need to finish the whole series....

do it. i always do complete series, even if an entry is crap. (thief 3 isn't crap, far from it... it's not as good as classic thief, but it's certainly better than a good chunk of games out these days.) example: i love the aliens series of movies but i hate alien resurrection with a passion. that movie is an ABORTION and joss whedon cannot fucking write dialogue. i still watch it.
