If I glance at it sidelong, it's blue and black. The longer I stare at it, the more white and gold it looks.
Also, damn you for bringing this here.

I saw it blue and black the first time I saw it. Then the next time, I was home on a laptop and it came up white and gold, which was genuinely fascinating. The really odd part is that I changed by screen tilt to see if I could flip it, and lo and behold, at a more acute angle, it flipped back. What was even more interesting is that after this, no matter which angle I viewed it at, I could only see black and blue again. The brain is fascinating.

The only way I could see the dress appearing as blue/black is with a defective monitor or one being (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viewing_angle) used at an angle it wasn't designed for.

It's only blue/black for me. I can make it go a bit white/gold with some serious effort and masking off half the picture. My first reaction was "Is this even a question? Its perfectly obvious." Then of course there's the comment threads everywhere, which, being the internet went something like "It's White and Gold you fucking idiots! You ought to be banned from driving and public office!" etc.
It's definitely fascinating.
I put down my getting it right to my "job", effectively. I've done a fair bit of looking at images taken by digital cameras and used to their weird foibles. Where I think other people are looking at this image and 'white balancing' their eyes according to "reality", which is a mistake.
All the same I must have seen a number of people saying "I am a dedicated photography professional for two decades! I use photoshop every day. I calibrate my monitor for fun on weekends and I will stake my most expensive lens on that dress being white and gold!"
So I don't know anymore.

Read the article I linked - the dress is objectively black and blue - seeing it white and gold is an optical illusion.
[EDIT] Posted this to WK before I saw your reply Muzman, though in response to your post - it's an optical illusion - it's not likely to be based on your keen eye, but on specifically how your monitor displayed it.

Down, unless they're the weirdest built stairs I've ever seen.
