So,... what's the situation on the Dark engine source code? - by Cliftor

Last I was here, the news was that it was missing. Has there been any new word on the chances of it getting released, or is it still lost as far as we know?

It's still a big unknown.

...and I'm sure you will hear about it if the source code ever comes any closer to being found.

Woah, I havn't heard anything about this. Where are we trying to get it from? (former) Eidos?

I thought the nearest thing people had got to was the OpenDarkEngine.

Eidos, and people who know people inside Eidos, and even devs have asked on our behalf over the last several years, and we're being told if they have it it's buried somewhere, and what incentive does Eidos have to take the time to go through the trouble looking for it? Last it was seen by anybody who knew about it, it was on an LGS hard drive. LGS was liquidated, so no one can say with any certainty that there's at least one CD waiting for permission to upload.

ODE is the closest we'll ever get. But there was news last year that the Dark engine source code's whereabouts were listed by Eidos as "Unknown". I've not heard anything else since then. With them being acquired by Square, it's even less likely than ever that we'll see it.
Edit: jtr beat me to it.

man, kinda sad to think about something like that being lost...all the hours that were probably put into developing it. Oh well

Isn't the Q. then not, Will you give us the source code but, Will you allow us to reverse engineer the game?

I've personally given up on ever seeing it being found or released. It will never happen. Never. Too much time has gone on, and too many uncaring hands have passed through Eidos. The dream is dead.
