So,... what's the situation on the Dark engine source code? - by Cliftor

If the source code was released, would that make it possible to write a better editor than DromEd? It's the only thing stopping me from making FMs.

Perhaps, but I think removing some of the hardcoded engine limits (brushes, lights, palettes, polygons, etc.) would be at the top of most FM authors' lists.

Oh? What other games have you made maps for?

Did he at any point say he makes maps for other games? No, he didn't. He basically insinuated that Dromed is a pain in the ass, which is 100% true, especially for beginners.

That makes sense since I hear about a lot of authors fighting the limits.

Nothing serious, but I've played around with making maps for HL, HL2, Neverwinter Nights, and Oblivion.
I'm not very experienced at mapping so I don't believe anything I want should take precedence over seasoned DromEd users. I've tried DromEd twice now, and both times hit a brick wall with something, but I'm getting ready to go in for a third attempt because Thief is worth it.
I just wonder how quick fan mission authors would be to bite at the idea of ironing out a few creases.

Not that it matters - but I've made maps for a couple other games and dromed still kicked my behind when I gave it a shot. :(

Unless DromEd is also released in source code, changing the hard coded limits may not work, because DromEd wouldn't know about them. Or is DromEd using the executable as a kind of plugin. In that case DromEd would also benefit from it. Otherwise you have to keep them in sync, because if only one of them has higher limits, then the common denominator is still the lower limit.

I think our best hope is if we can get René to convince or enable us to convince someone in power that it would make for really good publicity for Thief 4.
For instance, they could release it Monday with the announcement of Thief 4. But that might be rushing things, so maybe they could announce the release of it at E3. A very good marketing scheme. :)

How can they announce the release of something that might not even exist anymore? We're all hoping the dark engine still exists, but it may not.
