So,... what's the situation on the Dark engine source code? - by Cliftor

And if Sean Barrett would've been able to give us the code he had for the Siege Engine (R.I.P.) that the LGS devs were thrilled about, you bet that would take precedence.
Can you explain this please?

Also if someone manages to make improvements like realtime shadows or other modern features to dark engine, we could probably use these in already released fan missions :D.
Maybe, but it's just eye candy. The missions were never designed to take advantage of the new tech.

True but if someone manages to pull of a few improvements to dark engine it's not likes it's a bad thing :). The future is of course in TDM and possible in Thief 4 if it ever comes out.

Even if Thief 4 did come out could we ever trust it? If you read up on Deus Ex 3 for example they're doing some awful things like the health is going to be like the COD games or Gears of War, that regeneration thing were you can't actually see the damage. The Dark Engine is a classic in the same way that Dark Side of the Moon is or a 1958 Gibson Les Paul. It was born out of hard graft and love from the people at LGS. If we had the source code we could improve it, make it look more up to date but it would still be the same beautiful engine right?
Also, something like this can't go missing. Don't fool yourselves, its out there and there has to be more than one copy. No one in their right mind spends hours upon hours of their lives creating something and then not take a copy for themselves 'just for the archives.' Until we are proved otherwise we should adopt this belief and try and hunt down a copy. Eidos really wouldn't care about giving it to a community like TTLG, they can't make any more money out of it and it would mean endless hours of fun for us. Maybe we should contact them?

They've been contacted repeatedly, and they've been dismissive. I think we tried a petition, too.

I don't know what needs explaining. Which part?
Sean Barrett?
Siege Engine?
Precedence?
YuSeF on 18/3/2009 at 20:26
Sean Barrett and the Siege Engine. Is the source code for ss2 also missing? I hear they are very similar and are based off the same original thief source code?
jtr7 on 18/3/2009 at 20:42
The Siege Engine was going to be like a significantly-advanced Dark Engine, made by the same main guy, Sean Barrett. I don't know who else worked on them. As I understand it, SS2 fundamentally uses the same source code to render Thief. Nameless Voice and others could explain that better than I.

Is anybody here who knows Japanese? Well, as all of you know, Square-Enix is a Japan company, so I guess if we would try to write to them on their native language about the Dark Engine source, it would make sense:erm:.

Square Enix petition? ;) :)

Yes. New boss - different minds. Why not?
