So no, your correct, they should've made it a little differently, but also, your wrong in assuming that they would've gladly did things a little more to the fan bases' liking.
They where trying to fix what they saw as flaws in the old game, and naturally, they fouled it up. No need to say to me that they should have, because obviously, when you go about making a sequel to a commercially dismal series, you take the good things out of the game that made it a classic, and replace them with things that'll appeal to lazy Halo-playing dolt.
From what we've heard from the devs themselves, your statement is a grossly negligent negative interpretation of things – at its best.

I'm not happy with what they felt they had to do, but its pointless to bicker on about it. Let's worry more about the 4th sequel.
And Thief IV will be the third sequel. :p

Thief DS wasn't bad.. it just wasn't great and i think everyone should be able to know why.. in fact, I'm sure i read one of the makers at one point being very unhappy with this fact and that was it was made to appeal to console gamers.. That is why they dropped the number '3' from it, that is why a 'third person' bit was added, and that was why they downed the graphics and level sizes and i got a feeling that was why they make the items too simple and less complex (No more hunting though you items list to find the right key, it automatically used it)
The basic story itself, i don't have any major problems with, Apart from a number of bits like the Enforcers (Keepers that go around killing everything in sight?) Caduca speaking English (she didn't really in Thief 2 and if she could speak it perfectly well, what was a translator for? Caduca seamed to be able to translate the glyphs and speak them in both English and whatever).. Also, i wasn't too keen on the huge injection of Glyphs.. If they need people like Caduca to be able to read them and understand them, then surely not ALL the keeper books would be written in glyphs since Garrett can happily read journals and notebooks and the odd books.. But a lot of the game seamed to centre on the fact that the keepers have lost all skill and now just use the glyphs to hid, record information etc..
On the point of the music, a fair amount of it sounded like it was the SAME music used in the other games.. maybe remixed a little, but not by too much at times.
All in all, it was an okay Thief game (boy, I've seen Fan missions that are A LOT worse and they use the dark Engine) but it wasn't at the same level as the first two.. and it's pretty clear that since his new one has more consoles in mind, it'll be at lest the same style... and i don't think I'll say too much more here cause.. a lot of you guys just seam to be interested in throwing insults at either other.. and i bet I'll get a few thrown at me.. well.. Thus is the way of karma...

Alright, alright, yeesh... I know this will single me out as a cynic, but really, this sorta crap happens so often... And are you certain they aren't just trying to keep their dignity? By stating things that'll lessen the seriousness of their impact on development?

Well, of course you can always assume that they are a bunch of ignorant and money-hungry bastards, but to what end? Since computer games are about entertainment in the broadest sense, I'd say there is more harm in spoiling a good game through prior bad-mouthing (funny word) than being disappointed by a bad one. And especially for TDS we have a lot of statements explaining the cause for the main flaws. On the other hand, I believe people feel better when they have something more or less tangible as a scapegoat: The government, the church, Ion Storm... sounds more catchy than "a network of agents with different interests which works as a whole to..." or "a few ideas tackled in a wrong way, resulting in this and that...".

One of my favorite features from TDP and TMA were the mission briefing cutscenes. They were the glue that held all the missions together and were rather stylish. I always looked forward to the next one after completing each mission. They were notoriously absent in DS. I felt shortchanged. It's like Ion Storm lacked any talent that could produce them for DS in the same style, so they didn't bother. Instead they just gave us Garret's narration over text briefings on a cheap looking psuedo gothic looking screen.
Surely Eidos Montreal has enough sense to put the briefing cutscenes back in IV. I hope. :erg:
agreed. i very well remember a cutscene from thief2 when garrett meets victoria for the first time. to me thats a short audiovisual masterpiece, which i had to watch again a couple of days later.

Thief DS wasn't perfect. It was a helluva lot better than nothing and at least it concluded the story. If you don't like it, don't play it...move on and let the rest of us fire it up every few years and enjoy it for what it is.

We've gone over this debate many, many times over the years.
Thief fundis can't get over the fact that Deadly Shadows is said, done, finished, and like people have said - pretty good and helluva alot better than nothing. There is 1 game that I'd agree is better without a certain part of it (Mothership Zeta), but Deadly Shadows to a very large degree held true to Thief's narrative, atmosphere, gameplay. It's just not 1:1.
That and Goldmoon Dawn is the worst hater of them all.

When you find yourself pulling out the "it's better than nothing" line, it may be time to stop and reconsider the direction one's defense has taken.
