That cements it; Blade skill is definitely going into my revised character build.

Dude, I've got blade skill.

I did not know that! I'm going to have to find out how to do this sneal move. Is there somebody in Cyrodil who trains people in the art of sneal? JK ;) But I really didn't know about the 6X thing. I thought it was 3X for everything.
I didn't chose Marksmanship as a Major skill but I'm using it like crazy anyway. I'm already at 26. I found out since there's no more misc skills, choosing your character for power leveling to get max multipliers doesn't really work like it did in Morrowind. This after a couple of test characters I ended up scrapping. So I *mostly* chose my most used skills as my Major skills, as one is really supposed to do. Still, there's a bit of room for power leveling left so I held back a couple such as Athletics, Marksmanship, and Light Armor. I'm at level 3 and have gotten 3 5x bonuses each time I've leveled so far--mostly due to my high use of marksmanship I think. In Morrowind I hated marksmanship because you never hit anything at low levels and wasted all your arrows so it just didn't seem to be worth it. I love the new realistic combat in Oblivion!
I'm now in the Kvatch Oblivion World doing the siege quest and I'm getting pwned. Power leveling has caused me to neglect my Blade skills and the Scamps shrug off fireballs. I did find 3 nice Daedric arrows so I think I'll give those a try for a long range stealth attack, provided I can recover them afterwards. I'm not wasting no Daedric arrows ona couple of damn dirty scamps. I wonder if they'll do one-shot kills? I suppose I could poison one first just to make sure. That would be cool.

Trick I picked up from the elderscrolls.com forums: Drop stolen goods ont he ground and pick them up again and you can sell them to normal merchants. I had made a mod to make an NPC accept stolen goods but this seems easier =P

That's a trick we used in Morrowind. I'm surprised they didn't change it.
When I start my thief character, I'm going to spend most of my time in cities. Not much dungeon crawling for me, I'm afraid. Just a lot of stealing from people, raiding houses, that sort of thing.

I ran straight out of the dungeon, and almost immediately joined the Thieves' guild.
Yes, I intended to be a thief from the off :D
I think I took a cursory glance at the main mission when the location of the Thieves' guild wasn't instantly forthcoming, but once I followed the hints in the newspapers, I was taffin' like a good 'un.
I must be getting quite far with the guild, as I've just started getting missions from the head honcho (who looks a RIGHT tit by the way).
Regarding combat, I barely ever get involved in face to face confrontations, mostly because of the guild's "Thou shalt not lay the smack down on the mark" commandment.
I'm level 14 now, and for the past 5-6 levels, the attributes that have been raising the most are agility, speed and personality. Do NOT spend any cash on bribes in the persuasion mini game. Once you learn how it works it's INCREDIBLY useful.
One thing I will say: They should have made the fence's target figures higher. I think I've been advancing through all of these missions so far purely on the funds generated by my first haul. It was worth over a grand :D

Been having a blast with the game and of course I'm playing as a Thief. One question though, is there a way to extinguish candles and torches like in our beloved Thief?

I don't believe so, but when your sneak skill gets high enough, you won't need to. At 100 you can practicaly dance the can-can on their lap in broad daylight and they won't see you. :o

I tried this with a stolen sword and it still had the red hand icon on it.

Same here, I couldn't get it to work.
