Trust me, FM's released in the last 4-5 years are several times harder than the original games, and new releases raise the bar even more

"Finals at the Academy", a T2 FM. Without consulting a walkthrough, complete the first objective that's asked of you, to read the scroll on the chair.
Finals at the Academy is
brutal, probably the hardest FM I've ever played, amazing mission but I still haven't managed to finish it

The difference between OMs and FMs is pretty simple. OMs have difficulty elements, while a lot of FMs are just made to frustrate people (See: adding a needlesly large amount of puzzles, hidden buttons or even worse, guessing)

i hated thief gold, thief 1 was way better in mission layout, and i get massive problems with thief gold textures in fan missions, thief gold should be put to rest and we should get back to thief 1 and thief 2.

"The original game had some horrible game design decisions, so we should be more accepting of horrible game design decisions in levels made 17 years later."
Come on you guys, have some standards. Don't be blind apologists.

Ok, I did not buy the "tip" up front, so I did not know the secret way to get the talisman. No buggy though, because I finally got back to a trunk that had the tip inside. I had tried to pick its lock, but could not. I had forgotten about it, but found it again and used a key. Bingo.
Ok, completed the mission with all loot. That is untypical for me. I usually leave a few bits here and there.
Now I am revisiting the cathedral. Wow, I have played this before (smacks head…) :p OK, there are ghosts and zombies, but the general game is the same. OK, the big tombs do not open (for what I can tell), but the map is the same. I kind of feel cheated that many people chose to use T1 maps for T2 FMs, instead of building their own. Maybe they were trying to "improve" the play?
A while ago, I used to get really irritated by some FMs. I think it had more to do with beer than playability. Still, too much marble, too many AI, too much light and AI patrols with super helmets made me want to just stop playing. Now I understand that some FM makers like to emulate T1/TG themes and techniques. It is a new perspective for me. A perspective I think many of you have had for over a decade, but it is new to me. I am not saying I like it, but I understand it. Just like I understand RAP. I do not like most of it, but I do understand it. I prefer the Beatles, RUSH, The Black Keys, or Foo Fighters to hip hop and modern disco. I tend to like T2 type missions by comparison. It is now obvious that T2 ws an easier game than T1. I have played T2 on expert many times and it is much easier than TG on normal.
FM makers can do what they want. They can make the game unplayable if they want. The FMs are free. Now if they cost $, I would be pissed off sometimes, but these games are free. Play it and if you hate it, stop and move on. I wish more things in life were that simple :ebil:

I, like most of us, cut our teeth on the OMs. One of many things I learned is the importance of frequent "hard saves", especially on missions I know will be difficult or complex. I have nothing bad to say about the OMs. In fact, even many of today's posts make reference to how these new missions and mods don't reflect the "original Thief experience". Granted there are some FMs that set out to challenge you with tiny, abstractly hidden keys and ridiculously long locked doors, but I have yet to play a mission that I didn't complete through many, many reloads. I would much rather be able to say a mission was very hard, than to go through it in 10 minutes so I can bring a fruit list to Jenivere.

The cheek of some people. Fan authors give you free games to play and you just complain. Constructive criticism is one thing but not just moaning

There's a readable in the mission that explains this. IIRC it's a purchasable hint at the start of the mission. In short, it's easily accessible information that you managed to miss out on.
Actually the readable is in the library.
Nickie I think Fortuni was referring to Zylonbane's alteration of Xorak's post. Even if it was his opinion the alteration wasn't necessary and wasn't really "fixed" by swapping one opinion for another. This practice is actually misquoting an individual.

I know, and agree that it's not something we tend to do in Fan Missions. My reply was directed at 2 posts but one was deleted so it made a bit of a nonsense of my post. Impolite or not though, it's not trying to pass something off as a genuine quote.
