Some nice settlement locations. - by zombe

/ almost posted this in the mammoth thread - bad tendencies /
Got the aqua-girl/boy perk and went exploring the sea (don't like using powerarmor). Sadly, none of the ships had anything interesting - which i did not expect. All i found was a few pices of common junk - if any. Misgrouped objects (some items on decks not moving with the ship). Even a ship having its anchor stuck another sunken skip - with absolutely nothing there. All nice and interesting places - with nothing there. Weird ...
All of that was forgiven when i realized that the WHOLE gigantic ISLAND out there is a settlement location. Given the lack of civilization (read: polygons) that place should be godly for base building (read: high build cap) :D. It even comes with built in 20 units of electric power. Currently in process of cleaning up the pace.
Anyone have experience building there? Is the cap as lenient as it seems? The place looks lovely.

Interesting. How much of the junk did you clear up? For example the shipping containers on the ship and submerged around the ship (there is quite a lot of crap submerged around the island).
I finished clearing all the junk i did not want (kept all the standing trees and some neat looking junk around [also stored various structural and other things for reuse later]):
* ~1300 wood and ~800 steel ... did you really use that all?
* only ~50 concrete (quite a lot of copper and ceramic tho, so that will help)

I cleaned out all the shipping containers, there was a ton of steel in there. Didn't take down too many of the trees on the island, though. Also only barely looked underwater. Everything being radioactive tends to put me off too much swimming, even with more RadAway than I could ever use.

Had no troubles with radiation myself - aqua perk gives immunity to water radiation (+ infinite breath) and the rad-barrels can be scraped (hazmat suit helps and weights only 3 - so, i always carry one around) removing all of the radiation (felt really stupid when i realized that after i built a fence around the pond in Starlight Drive In).

Ah yes, scrapping radioactive barrels is always hilarious.

I built a summer home there, but I ran out of wood afterwards.

Are we gonna make this the thread for discussing and showcasing settlements? If so, zombe's totally gotta change title to Picked Fences and I need to scrounge up some screenshots of my Autonomous Republic of Abernathy, I've built into it right up to the limit. I'm really digging this base-building part of the game, if I'd known I'd enjoy it so much I'd have rolled a fat, beardy bastard and called him Philip Strenger. Trying to set up my own fiefdom in the North-Western quarter of the map with the capital at Abernathy.
Free tip - don't use smaller building blocks for what could be built from larger ones, it's a waste of your build count. For instance, don't make use of four small floor tiles where you can use a single big one, or replace two individual units of wooden fence with one long unit where you can.
Also, anyone got any experience with setting up stores? I've set up a couple but the buggers I assigned to them won't trade with me while at the stalls. Funnily enough, if I ring the bell to gather the twits I can make use of the trade functions, but once they get back to the stalls it bugs out again.

They only trade between 8am and 8pm. They also constantly bug out and refuse to trade if the settlement gets attacked, they're too busy thanking you in annoying manner for helping drive the attackers away.
I instead have one in one of my settlements who won't go to her stall at all, no matter what, but will happily trade with me wherever she happens to be standing. Fun finding her when she likes to hide amongst a half-dozen other settlers in among the mutfruit bushes, though.

Looks like you got the better part of the buggy trader behaviour, then, what with her not going to the stall. I've got one random bartender who won't trade me anything at all, and I've got (minor spoiler, a character you meet in Goodneighbour) the Vault-Tec Rep tending my weapons store, but he won't sell to me unless he's away from the shop. Regardless of what time it is.
Eh, it ain't the end of the world, but it would be nice to fix it. I'd prefer doing all my trading on my own grounds, rather than hauling ass over to Diamond City.

Anyway, here's a video of my biggest settlement. Sadly a bit lacking in things like furniture, doors, and the top story of the second building due to hitting the building cap.

This place even includes a secret passage, leading to a well-hidden nothing.
