Yea, i just got the game as well, and have the same trouble, and i REALLY want to play this game
I got Thief Gold
i use ATI X700 Pro
i tried downloading that bug fix thing, and my Thief Gold version is 1.37
sometimes i can play the game, but at either random moments, or at random spots in the level, it will freeze and crash, sound continues, but i cannot move and have to get Task Manager up and end task
but mainly its probably because most of the time when i try to play, i get the black screen of death whenever i try to play it, how can i fix this!

i'm starting to think the stickied thread doesn't have a big enough font size. it should also have a "READ THIS OR BE PISSED ON" disclaimer or something like that.

Maybe....
but the point i say is, i checked the spot where my problem is, the black screen, and DOWNLOADED
Thief: Gold Direct3D Texture Error Fix.
BUT it still does it, it wasn't doing it at first...but then started again, even if i run that, and i don't see this so called ";safe_texture_manager" anywhere in my user.cfg

... it's not rocket science.
just ADD safe_texture_manager to the user.cfg MINUS the ; and see if that works. the next person to MULTIPLY the number of threads of people who can't be bothered to read the sticky carefully is going to be DIVIDED.

where do i put that? anywhere specific or does it not matter? at the top? at the bottem?
and its not rocket science, but it is confusing, i barely do stuff like this, so i don't have much of a clue, usually when doing this, i am able to run it through instinct, but un-knowledgable instinct it is...
in my User.cfg is says this
starting_mission 1
cash_bonus 1500
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18
WHERE in that, do i put this "safe_texture_manager"? and how to type, anything specific, or just those 3 words and those 2 underscores?
and is something wrong with my mission_map? like, 15 isn't after 5.... ??
june gloom on 12/9/2006 at 22:59
sigh.
your user.cfg should look like this:
starting_mission 1
cash_bonus 1500
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18
safe_texture_manager
your mission order is fine. thief gold adds several new missions, placing them between existing missions, but they're numbered higher. mission 5 would be assassins, which is from the original version of the game, and mission 15 would be thieves' guild, which is new for thief gold.

thanks for that more specifically, I started playing the game, and it didn't go to the black screen of doom, and played flawlessly, until i entered the Mission 1 castle after going down and swimming out of the well....then it crashed and now is going all black whenever i try to enter my saved game file.....
So....What now? why was it playing fine until some random moment, then makes it so i can't ever load my saved game...

I had been reading the sticky thread you mentioned before I added to this particular thread and followed all it advised several times before first posting to ask for help, as I had explained in my first post here (shrug).
I added to this thread instead of starting a new one because I think I've once heard it was considered proper etiquette to search for an already existing thread that addressed the same problem.
The only problem is that it doesn't appear that my particular question has been seen or replied to as of yet, as it looks like I haven't gotten a direct reply yet while others have.
Anyway, after reading the above advice to Mounce I tried editing it and re-editing the user.cfg a few more times. I have Thief Gold version 1.03. As explained in my first post here, I looked up the user.cfg as the thread stated, and found that it only contained the following on my system:
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18
Since there was no semicolon to remove (again, I had mentioned that above), I went ahead and tried editing it to add safe_texture_manager in it, then tried it. Still no luck. Then, after reading the later additions to this thread, I edited it to show the following:
starting_mission 1
cash_bonus 1500
mission_map 1,2,3,4,5,15,6,7,16,9,17,10,11,12,13,14,18
safe_texture_manager
Still no luck.
If anyone needs to know any further details on my system that might help apart from all that I have listed so far please let me know.
But anyway, I don't know about anyone else asking for help so far in this thread as I don't know anyone here, but I did check the sticky many times and followed all it had advised before posting here, and did say that as the very first thing I explained in my addition to this thread. :(

yea, i'm pretty much in the same position you are, just we have different versions of the game...
june gloom on 13/9/2006 at 03:34
okay, i dunno how to fix your problem, shroud, that's a new one on me. are you sure that's 1.03? i've never heard of such a version. the version i have is 1.9. no patch exists for thief gold btw as it is essentially a "fully patched" version of thief (think of it as something like duke nukem atomic edition, which had all the features of duke3d 1.3 (the original version) but was version 1.5, and featured a new episode and other content. but you had to pay for it.)
mounce, have you tried bringing up the task manager, finding thief.exe in the processes tab, rightclicking it, selecting "select affinity", then unchecking one of the CPUs listed? it's best to do this when you first start up the game.
