I also have version 1.03 of Thief Gold. However a hint as to "if theres updates" is to download this cool utility tool.
(
http://www.gameshadow.com/)
It searches what games you have installed and then does checkups to see if theres any updates or mods. Completely free; just need an email address.
Though for some odd reason Gameshadow aint downloading my 1.33 patch update for Thief Gold; but at least I can try finding a patch for it using the net.
PS yeah I too was having problems with the latest NVidia drivers; was able to play the game a lot until I installed one of the drivers; tried loading the game and then poof I hear error (3D Texture) and I tried editing the user.cfg file and it didnt work either. On Thief Gold I couldnt find "disable hardware acceleration"

For all people that have (as me) problems with Thief 1, Gold and their FM: I have tried to uninstall the driver NVidia 91.31 and to reinstall old driver 81.98 (in bundle with my grafic card). Well... everything now works me! :)

Correction:
When you install Thief Gold, my version says (at installation screen) version 1.37 However when you view the readme file after it installs it says 1.03
Here is what I did to solve my problem
Note that I'm running on NVidia drivers 91.47
1.) Save your Saved Games Folder (copy to MyDocuments)
2.) Un Install the game using Control Panel
3.) Delete the directory under Programs or wherever it was
4.) Re Install the game
5.) Copy your saved games over
6.) Download the Thief Gold Fix File
7.) Copy (Send to MyDocuments) the Thief Application under Thief Directory
8.) Extract the file of Thief Gold Fix to your Thief Directory
9.) Use the Thiefgoldfix.exe (application) to play the game
Note (again) No Graphic Drivers were changed during this process. I am thinking that for every graphic driver you update, you must un install the game and then re install Thief Gold :P

PS and yes the game actually plays.

Whoah, Dethtoll, was that a small fit of road rage back on page one? I mean, some of the posters seemed to have problems beyond the stuff described in the stickie. And I do too. Angelot posted a description of a problem and a picture, which is identical to the problem I'm having. However, unlike Angelot, I'd like to keep my video card drivers up to date. Can it be that nobody has found a solution to the problem?
Recap: An error message appears, saying that "Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage". Game is patched to 1.33 and the thieffixed.exe is extracted to the dir. Now that message doesn't appear anymore, but in its stead is a "Thief: The Dark Project has encountered a problem and needs to close"-message, which doesn't seem to have advanced the situation all that much.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I'd really love to be able to play my all-time favourite game without having to degrade my rig.
