After wasting time with trialware, I decided to come here to ask about movie files. My copy of Adobe Premier no longer works under Windows 7.
1. I bought (
http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?1=1&trkid=USsemKWS&storeKey=us&pid=prod4130080) Corel Motion Studio 3D. Trouble is, it only outputs to HD uncompressed, 32-bit AVI. So a 4-second video is 164 MBs. (It outputs to other formats, but Thief 2 is still AVI-only, isn't it?)
2. Is there a freeware converter to compress the AVI down to a lower resolution?
3. What resolution should I make the videos?
16:9?
4:3?
X:X?

Try (
http://www.virtualdub.org/) VirtualDub. I used that for the movies for my previous FM.
Go to the Video menu and select Compression. I'm not sure of the best codec to select but I reckon Indeo 5.11 is the safest one because Thief players should all have it.

Should I do a PAL version also?

If you're just doing straight compression/format conversion of video and audio on Windows, it's pretty hard to beat (
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) eRightSoft's SUPER.
The downside to SUPER is that, while it is capable of converting between a massive number of formats and gives you lots of options for the conversion, the UI is a bit obtuse and takes some practice.

If you used Adobe Premier, you will never feel such comfortable with any other program. What is the reason you can't start it anymore under Win 7? Maybe too old version? I know Adobe sometimes does the sale of the old versions of its products (not TOO old, though), if you luck you can even download something completely free (and completely legal!).

It's version 5. Windows 7 refuses to even install it, it's so old.
VirtualDub seems to do what it advertises. Nice little program.

I downloaded and installed the Indeo Codec used by Thief 2. However, VirtualDub can't find the codec. Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry about it. I used XVid (or DivX, can't remember) for the videos in my recent missions, it gives good quality and smaller file sizes, and will work in NewDark as long as the player has the codec - and most people have both of those these days. Indeo by comparison is lossy and doesn't compress particularly well.

I ran the avi files through the DviX converter, but it turned them into b17.dvix and cs17.dvix. Thief wouldn't play them. I ran the Xvid install but it didn't do anything. Ahh, it's 2 A.M. Time to hit the sack.
