or felt padded moccasins.
I disagree. Garrett has to cross all sorts of rough terrain at times. Soft boots would break too easily.

Thats why Garrett is reluctant to do so.
"I've never robbed an orphanage before"
Garrett doesnt like the thought of robbing an orphanage or insane assylum, but if he doesnt leave with loot, there is a great chance that he doesnt leave with anything. And he does need to eat, y'know.
I don't know about that. I don't think he's reluctant to steal from such a place per se. He's just noting that he's never done anything like this before which is because orphanages and mental asylums are not likely targets for a thief.

If you had to wear those clunky boots you'd be clumsy too. You'd think that since he
is a thief, the creators of the game would have given him a pair of sneakers. :weird:
He wears them for comfort. Gamespy had a 'mock' interview with Garrett a long while back (Teri Brosius writing for Garrett of course :p). "Garrett" mentioned that he lifted his shoes from a noble, and they're the most comfortable he's ever worn.
As for the clumsy comment, I think that mostly belongs to Thief 3. He can't put items down as silently as he did in the first two games. He doesn't use any stealth when opening doors, he just throws them right open and every guard in the area says "OMG a door opening! In a building! No way! Must be a THIEF!" (though to be fair, every single door in Thief 3 creaks like crazy). When attack with the knife he has no finese, he just swings it around like a dumb monkey. And when walking, due to the 'enhancement' that is body awareness, he staggers through the streets like a drunk (Benny would be proud). In fact, Garrett's drunken movement is one of the main reasons I don't find Thief 3 as fun as the previous games.

Well, I nearly had a heart attack in Thief Gold when trying to open those big metal doors in the Mages guild. They make an amazing amount of noise when you open them, I was sure half the residents were going to turn up to investigate. Fortunately, nobody ever seems to react.

My God why does every thread here have to turn into you guys whining about how bad Deadly Shadows was? Besides the fact that pretty much every aspect of the game has been argued over ad nauseum, there were actually some cool things about the game that people never seem to consider (like the bow animations).
As to the comment about the dagger, you couldn't exactly say that Garrett wielded the blackjack with finess in the first two games.

The guy mentioned how clumsy Garrett was. I responded. It's a fact that the movement in Thief 3 is more clumsy than in the first 2 games. It wasn't designed to turn the thread into an anti-DS one, so chill. I still enjoy DS.

If people knew more about the production of the Thief games then maybe they wouldn't argue about it so much. The production on Deadly Shadows was very different to 1 and 2 and there was no way that it was going to turn out to be the same "Thief" game. So why argue if it wasn't LGS's fault and it was bound to happen? But because they are very different games, people are bound to compare it's different aspects.

One more thing I found- or rather...didn't:
I downloaded the Thief 3 transcripts (can't remember who did them), and in there - in the transcripts for the fences- it has sevral remarks that appear to be triggered by doing the missions in a certain way.
So e.g., if you ghost the hammerite mission the fence would say something like how all the hammers are upset because their chalice was stolen but noone saw anything.
But if you got seen on that mission, the fence would say something like how Garrett should stick to the shadows more.
But, I have never been able to trigger those. Has anyone else been able to get the fences to utter those special speeeches.
And to clarify my point of view about the magic-wielder and their staffs:
First of all, they didn't need a staff in the previous games. And without a staff they are more dangerous- why, they are almost useless WITH their staff . I just feel that it takes away from the "magic" if it is depending on a piece of wood easily lost or stolen.
The staff busines seems to me like if Garrett had to use a cloak (or whatever) to hide in shadows.
...but then again in T3 Garrett needs gloves to climb...

Those were most likely features removed towards the end of the development cycle. In the code of the game you can apparently find lots of references and left over bits of items and events that weren't used, as well as conversations and other dialogue that are in the files, but are never said in the game.

Every time I visited heartless perry or whatever that guys name was (the first fence), he always just said said the same old story about getting beaten up by goons...
